Coronavirus: 40% of recent COVID-19 deaths in England and Wales occurred in care homes - ONS

London did not account for the biggest share of coronavirus-related deaths for the first time - that went to the South East.

That's shocking but not totally surprising when you hear that people were being sent out of hospital into care homes who had either never been tested for the virus or had tested positive but were sent to them anyway :o

The treatment of people in care homes has been a major failing in the way this crisis has been handled in my opinion.

People who are at the most risk have been callously betrayed.

Yes, it's really bad, I don't like to criticise too much, as it's so easy to do in hindsight, but early on it was clear the elderly were most at risk and needed total protection and lockdown.

I'm wondering if this was an NHS failing surely before sending a patient out to a care home, they had a duty of care to make sure the patient didn't have Covid-19 knowing that potentially it could kill all the residents of the care home?

It seems crazy when most of the hospitals were never at full capacity and there are empty purpose-built field hospitals all over the country?

It looks like negligence somewhere?

Care home deaths double compared to last year - regulator

Deaths of care home residents since the start of March are almost double what they were last year, a regulator has said.

Care Inspectorate Wales (CIW) was notified of 2,165 deaths between 1 March and 8 May - 98% more than for the same period in 2019 and 61% more than 2018.

Covid-19 was confirmed or suspected in 504 cases - an increase of 86 since CIW's last update which covered the period up to 1 May.

The information is provided to CIW by care homes, unlike the Office for National Statistics which compiles data from death certificates.

The cause of death also comes from the care homes, meaning the statistics might not match the daily tally of confirmed coronavirus cases published by Public Health Wales.

Wales' shadow social care minister Janet Finch-Saunders said the data "suggest(s) that there really must be a more concerted effort to protect residents and staff of adult care homes, and underlines the importance of full testing".

Plaid Cymru local government spokesperson Delyth Jewell said the comparison with last year "is deeply troubling and shows how desperately important it is for the need for universal care home testing".

It's this proviso that it was confirmed "or suspected" in 504 cases that I'm still really struggling with.

Why are cases being included in the statistics when there has been no confirmation that the virus was present?

How can this level of guesswork be given any sort of credence?

I just can't accept that the figures being bandied about are accurate in any way shape or form.

The confirmed - suspected of 504 should be shown in each type - whatever the confirmed cases are these get added to the daily list ( eventually ) .
As for the recorded daily figures we get each day - They are no where near correct ( days behind )
Today's figs when we get them - will again show up higher than previous days l due to the back log on reporting ).

I am not one who has criticised the government because on the whole I think they have taken a sensible approach and its easy to pick holes with the benefit of hindsight.

However in this instance it beggars belief that care homes weren't given at least as much attention as the NHS as it was clear as day before hand that this is where the greatest danger lay. It seems to me that the government and their advisors were so fixated with the protect the NHS message - brought about partly because of the scenes from Italy of their health service being over run and partly because of the usual merchants of doom and gloom who were determined to paint a picture of our health service as being second rate due to cutbacks - that they lost sight of the bleeding obvious.

Why have world death comparisons gone from the UK briefing?

Jonathan Blake

BBC political correspondent

The international death comparison slide was notable by its absence at Tuesday's government briefing.

It has not been seen since Saturday, which may have been its last appearance, having been shown regularly for some weeks.

This is not surprising as the UK recently reached the unenviable milestone of having the highest number of Covid-19 related deaths in Europe.

The black line edged upwards day-by-day, showing starkly how many people had lost their lives to the virus in stark contrast to others including Germany.

Ministers increasingly stressed how problematic the comparison was, heavily caveating the damning statistic.

The decision now seems to have been taken that it is neither helpful nor reliable enough to be of any use.
