Promoted / Coventry / Oxford / Rotherham Championship SAYS

Fri May 08, 2020 10:19 am

League One and League Two football will be axed until next season with promotion and relegation set to be confirmed.

Friday 8th May 2020

That's according to The Athletic, who suggest the action in tiers three and four will not be resumed.

The report claims the EFL will tell clubs in Leagues One and Two there is no chance of continuing the season, requesting a vote on how to decide promotion and relegation.

The plan remains for the Championship and Premier League seasons to be resumed if possible.

EFL chairman Rick Parry told MPs on the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport select committee that a resolution for tiers three and four was only a matter of days away with a key meeting taking place on Thursday.

And it seems a decision could come early next week, The Athletic reporting that the EFL are preparing to give clubs the news.

The plan is to agree on a method for promotion and relegation with the EFL already receiving proposals from a number of clubs.

The current favourite is said to be a points-per-game model, weighted to reflect home and away games.

That would remove any bias given to teams who have played more home games than others up to this point.

This method would see Coventry City crowned champions, with Rotherham United and Oxford United joining them in the Championship. Tranmere Rovers, Southend United and Bolton Wanderers would be relegated.

Swindon Town, Crewe Alexandra, Plymouth Argyle and Cheltenham Town would be promoted to League One with Stevenage relegated to the National League.

Newport County would be unaffected as they currently sit 15th in League Two.

The Athletic report that a League One club has prepared a detailed explanation of this method, with a full set of final tables, and emailed it to the EFL board.

It’s a mess. Premier League are discussing no relegations and so there will be no Championship promotions. What if Championship decide as they have no promotions they will have no relegation? Personally i think they meed to just sack it and start next season,

I like the fact Coventry and Oxford would be with us as they are 2 easy away journeys and a good day out.

Other than that its shit really especially for Bolton as it would pretty much finish them as a club.

It either has to be played out or voided you cannot make up results.
It would be better to work it back to the half way point when everybody played everyone once and see who wins at that point

non of this sits right with me... Oxford are level on points with 2 other teams and ahead of three clubs by 1 point...and 11 games un played...

There will be championship promotion under those plans but just the top 2, the next 2 seasons would have a change with 4 being relegated from the premier league and 2 promoted from the championship.

Whatever system they use it will be bad for some teams.

They could finish the season that way.

I think the weighted system is best. Takes into account home and away games and I want Oxford to be promoted.

tbh ive not done Oxford since the new stadium.. and maybe Coventry might get to play in Coventry..so id be happy from that point of view.. but its just not football.. our destiny in both promotion/play offs/possible promotion/playoffs/relegations have been decided in the last few games more times than I can remember during my time following us.. this season should be void. I don't see there is any football/integrity argument .just politics and money..

I agree with you. Should all be void.

I live near Oxford so they are my second team. Play some really good stuff to be fair. They would struggle in the championship though.

Spot on,it either has to be completed, or simply voided, any other scenario shouldn't even be considered, but as you say,all I hear is money jingling in the background  :old: :bluebird:

How would the administration and expulsion of Bury FC be factored in here as they no longer exist as a club. Making it 71 clubs in the EFL?

Surely if the season is voided then every decision in that season has to be voided aswell, including the expulsion of Bury.
They could well be let back in to the league as they do exist they just have no league to play in at the moment

Why do you think they’d struggle Mac?
Lack of finance / small squad?

They are very reliant on just a few players. One of whom is on loan. Lost two of their best players to Brentford transfer window.

They have a very small squad supplemented by a lot of loan players. Over the course of a full season it would tell I think.

When on form though the football they play is very, very good.

I see.
You never know though mate. There’s always one surprise package. All depends how they’re run I suppose. What’s the youth system like there?

The owner isn’t great and takes a bit.

I think they are more for getting players cheap and developing them rather than youth. Crowds are stuck at about 8,000 max too. Sadly one of the clubs who will struggle with no games although this year have had a few big cup games.

I could see them getting bullied in the championship. Although they signed George Thorne on loan who seemed to help with that.
