On this day 75 years ago: Victory in Europe was achieved by the Allied Forces in World War 2. Over 57,000 Scots lost their lives during the conflict. We will remember them. Pictured are men of 7th Seaforth Highlanders in 1944, advancing near Caen in France.

Let us remember the 27 million Russian dead of World War Two, 87% of the Wehrmacht's casualties were inflicted on the Eastern Front.Without their terrible suffering we would not have won the war. This does not detract from those who served, many from my own family, rather it serves to think of other theatres of war. The Indian Army stopped the Japanese overunning India. The merchant seamen on the Artic Covoys, the Chindits in Burma, the codebreakers the five thousand Southern Irish who died serving in the British Forces.
