' Spain extends its lockdown / but only just '

Spain extends its lockdown

President Sanchez only just gets it continued in the voting by the Spanish Parliment.

The problem over here in Spain is that the Govt is only in place by a minority and depends on other regions backing him and they are starting to go against him.

Catalonia (not backing President Sanchez anymore) and the Basque region are starting to turn against him.

The Spanish people for two months have not had a penny of the Govt during this tough lockdown and now they are rising up.

This lock down continues in Spain

Apparently it is something to do with a 4 phase return to something resembling 'normal'

Currently most of Spain is in Phase Zero but good news for Annis where he lives they are already in Phase One.

My understanding is that as each Phase is introduced the restriction become less and more things like sharing cars will be allowed.

Thanks Tony :thumbright:

No we are in phase 0, a couple of small islands have started phase 1 already.

We start phase 1 from Monday 11th May 2020 :thumbright:

Yes your totally right every 2 weeks if the death tolls ect remain low in your region your region will go in to the next phase with less restrictions :thumbright:

This is the Spanish Govts way of trying to get the lockdown eventually lifted by the end of June, if everything goes well.

But it goes by your region now how the virus is :thumbright: :thumbright:

Thanks both Tony's :thumbright: :thumbright:

President Sánchez:

Together with support from his coalition partner Unidas Podemos and a few smaller groups, this gives Sánchez at least 176 affirmative votes, enough for the simple majority he requires.

The Catalan Republican Left (ERC), which was instrumental in getting Sánchez back into the prime minister’s office and which had so far supported the extensions, has decided to vote against this time around, as will two other separatist parties, Together for Catalonia (JxCat) and Popular Unity Candidacy (CUP).

Alarm or chaos

In a country that has been particularly hard hit by the coronavirus crisis, with 25,613 officially recognized deaths as of Tuesday, the government has been framing the situation as a choice between “state of alarm or chaos.”

“The only tool to limit mobility and fight against Covid-19 is the extension of the state of alarm,” insisted Sánchez in the Senate on Tuesday.

But some opposition groups argue that there are existing laws that could be used instead to retain central command over healthcare and curtail citizen mobility during the country’s ongoing phased deescalation.

There have also been calls for Sánchez to disassociate coronavirus relief measures from the state of alarm. Legal experts have warned that if the extension fails in Congress, it could mean that almost all the measures the government has introduced to address the coronavirus crisis would be immediately dismantled on May 9.

Spain’s system of two-week periods differs from the methods used by other European countries to implement their own emergency legislation. Italy decreed a state of emergency on January 31 for a six-month period, and France introduced it on March 23 for the space of two months
