EFL to thrash out TV deal with Sky Sports to show all Cardiff City, Swansea City, Leeds United and West Brom games live - report

Tuesday 5th May 2020

Plans are being thrashed out to ensure games can be shown live as a means of generating a revenue stream when football returns

Sky and BT Sport will not refund customers amid the coronavirus cancellations

The Football League are reportedly attempting to renegotiate their huge TV deal with Sky Sports in order to allow all Championship games to be shown live.

EFL chair Rick Parry last week wrote to all 71 clubs to lay out plans for all Football League matches to be broadcast online, using the iFollow service, as means of generating a revenue stream for when football resumes behind closed doors.

However, according to the Daily Mail, that would be in breach of their existing £595m deal with Sky Sports, which currently permits them to stream only midweek and rescheduled matches.

Matches due to kick-off in their regular Saturday 3pm slot or chosen for Sky Sports coverage are also not allowed to be shown on iFollow. However, the EFL are hopeful that can change.

It is thought that Sky believe they are in a strong negotiating position, given they are only 18 months into a five-year broadcasting deal with the EFL and could demand a hefty fee for any changes to the terms.

The EFL, however, think they can rely on the goodwill they showed the broadcaster by not demanding a rebate on their £119m-a-season deal due to games not being played at present.

Given fans in this corner of the world will likely not be allowed into Cardiff City Stadium nor the Liberty Stadium when football returns, it is thought this is the next best option for supporters.

Cardiff City sit two points off the play-off spots, with Swansea City just one point behind them with nine games remaining in the Championship campaign.

The Bluebirds and Swans will harbour ambitions of reaching the top six and ultimately the Premier League, should the season resume and be played out in its entirety.

So, should a deal be struck with Sky, this would at least enable fans of the two clubs to watch all of what could well be an enthralling conclusion to the Championship campaign, even if it is behind closed doors.

I then wonder how subscribers would feel if they paying and they neighbours aren’t. Be interesting to see how this develops.

No, surely Sky will want the revenue, and with pubs shut will look for new subscribers.

Agree. But again some season ticket holders won’t subscribe so will they get theirs for free you think? Or they’ll watch it on a different platform?

Hopefully any deal thrashed out will include a portal for ST holders to watch for "free" if they dont have sky.

My thinking there is that sky cover the game and boradcast as normal / all efl games on red button, but the club also have the rights to live stream the gsmes using sky footage via cardiffcityplayer. CCFC then email / post a unique code out to logon to ST holders only.

Any non sky customer who is an ST holder can then watch the games they have paid for, any "one gamers" can buy a match pass as normal.

Thinking on it, ccfc could fo that for ST holders without sky.

Hopefully the clubs give season ticket holders a free subscription to I follow so they watch every game.
