PREMIER LEAGUES NEW PLAN:

The Premier League are close to agreeing a scenario which would see top-flight clubs playing out the rest of the season at neutral venues - but without the threat of relegation.

The alarm bells ringing for Cardiff City, Swansea City, Leeds United and West Brom as Premier League consider new plan

It was discussed as part of Project Restart, the plan to get football moving again

That scenario would put an end to both Cardiff and Swansea's hopes of promotion this season.

It would also see relegation scrapped.

Cardiff City and Swansea City were still very much in the play-off reckoning when the Championship season was halted
The Premier League are close to agreeing a scenario which would see top-flight clubs playing out the rest of the season at neutral venues - but without the threat of relegation.

A report published by BBC Sport states that clubs are open to the idea which was discussed last week as part of the "Project Restart" proposals being considered.

Cardiff City and Swansea City have not played in almost two months, with their promotion hopes delicately poised when football was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Bluebirds and Swans sit two and three points off the top six respectively, but if no teams were to be relegated from the top flight, alarm bells would be ringing for Championship promotion hopefuls, including runaway sides Leeds United and West Brom.

Details emerged this weekend of a proposal to play the remaining 92 Premier League fixtures at neutral grounds around the country.

It would also see relegation scrapped.

The report states: "Clubs near the bottom of the table feel it is unfair to play in such different conditions when at risk of relegation."

Brighton chief executive Paul Barber voiced his opposition to neutral grounds being used over weekend, releasing a statement saying the plan would create "very obvious disadvantages" for the Seagulls.

Barber said: "At this critical point in the season, playing matches in neutral venues has, in our view, potential to have a material effect on the integrity of the competition."

Further discussions are expected to take place after the government reviews its lockdown measures on May 7.

There could still be promotion from the Championship, however, with the Guardian reporting on Friday that the EFL's contingency plan, should the season not be able to finish, would see Leeds and West Brom elevated to the top flight, with the current four teams in the play-off spots - Fulham, Brentford, Nottingham Forest and Preston - fighting it out for the last place in an expanded Premier League next season.

That scenario would put an end to both Cardiff and Swansea's hopes of promotion this season.

One of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever read. Just bin it all and start again when when it considered safe to do so.

Complete farce if that happened

Liverpool would be champions within a few games and what’s the point of playing any of the other games??

I agree. I have my own views on if / how football should return but this scenario is completely stupid.

You can’t say that with out telling us. I bet it’s better than any of the above ideas. As yours is probably more from a fans view rather than commercial.

I know your feelings and I can understand why you think that way but I think that sport IS being missed (I may be wrong but so may you) and if it was a massive NO from the government it would have told ALL footy authorities by now to forget it. To my knowledge it hasn't done that yet so I'm guessing they aren't (yet) blowing the idea out of the water.
Like you, I think that watching footy without fans is by no means perfect but I'd watch City playing whatever the circumstances.

Totally agree. They nothing more than my opinions, and I prefer to hear differing opinions to my own for me to grow as a person. If everyone agreed with me all the time I wouldn’t be the person I am today. I take other views as an education for myself.

Most things like this have many different possible outcomes many of which could be right.

So can we prise you idea out of you?
I always tell the kids to always voice they opinions ideas as they may just be the best as no onelse has thought of it.

Ps. Is there a way to insert smileys on the mobile version?

If a championship team has no chance of being promoted what is the point of risking there health by playing the season out ?
Most will refuse to play.

Same for premier league teams in the relegation battle ?

The only teams who will try are the ones going for champions league places as it's worth a fortune

Ok, here goes...
It's by no means perfect but
Play out the season and what will be will be re champions, relegation etc.
Games behind closed doors (no neutral venues) with all people involved tested on the morning of the game. Those positive don't play and are replaced. I realise that this has implications re medical and TV staff but can't think of a way arount that at the moment.
Games can be shown on SKY / BT / EFL channels
My opinion

It would be a method I would favour if null and void isn’t an option as it fulfills games unlike some of the current options. It certainly gets my second option vote.

I agree. Don't think that any option is the perfect one.
Be interesting to see what is decided. :)

Teams in the bottom half of the premiership wont give a shit as all they can do is look forward to another money spinning 20/21 season (if goes ahead)
Teams in the top half of the championship will feel very hard done by if this is how they plan to see out the remainder of the season
Its not fair and its not right

Re: FOOTBALL: " WE ARE NEAR A FINAL DECISION "

Mon May 04, 2020 12:23 pm

If I was a player in a team in the bottom half I would probably refuse to play

There is absolutely no point in putting yourself at any risk at all if the games are pointless and meaningless

Another farce dreamed up by the football authorities

Cannot see this happening, there would be loads of legal challenges, if the season is cancelled then it needs to be cancelled full stop, you just cannot promote or relegate sides, if games are not played, the lawyers would have a field day. I have said it before and i'll say it again.
Either finish the season of if not, completely void it, none of this lark of promoting or relegating teams, just because they are top or bottom, when and if the season is voided, absolutely ridiculous :banghead:

Agree

Absolutely and it's a ridiculously pointless exercise, if the only real outcome is that Liverpool can be crowned champions.

That's already a forgone conclusion and few would argue if they were given the title at any point; a bit like the bookies paying out on a forgone conclusion

The big part for me, is that there simply has to be promotion and relegation to keep the very integrity that Brighton suddenly seem to think applies to them (not because they are fighting for their Premier League lives, of course ;) )

Typical of the 'stuff you, we're okay' attitude of many and shouldn't come to fruition

Neutral grounds? No crowds? Not nice but it doesn't matter. The new 'rules' will be same for everyone and the end result a lot lot better than any alternative I've seen

Re: FOOTBALL: " WE ARE NEAR A FINAL DECISION "

Completely nonsensical to not have relegation.

The whole season would have been pointless.

You can’t change the rules with a fifth of the season to play.

Either void the season or finish every game with the winners the Champions and the usual spots for ECL & EL and relegation.

Even if it takes until Christmas.

Re: FOOTBALL: " WE ARE NEAR A FINAL DECISION "

Mon May 04, 2020 5:37 pm

This would be the worst way to have the season decided as it doesn’t deliver on any measure.

There are only 3 options as I can see it:

1. Void the season
2. Finish the season with current standings - only games to play would be play offs.
3. Continue with season until it can be completed, however long it takes - even if at neutral venues.

To start the season but change the rules, that creates an outcome whereby different rules apply to different teams is a bizarre combination of different options and one where sporting integrity gets cast aside - if the team in 3rd could move into 2nd, the team in 7th must have the chance to move into 6th etc.

If teams can’t be relegated or promoted based on merit then there is absolutely zero reason to bring the season back and put the safety of players, officials etc on the line not to mention directing resources into places they could be used far better.

you can play 6 a side { 7 subs } on tennis courts with hockey goals in Iceland ...4 points for a win 5 for a draw no offside, no VAR. no crowds and 3 of your team have to be over 80....and say its all about maintaining integrity... :?
played to a conclusion ..or void...

You're 100% right, if they do the above, Nukes

Can't stand the 'never at fault' bin dippers myself but I do want the right teams to take the spoils in each division from top to bottom...and that means titles, promotion and relegation

No escaping through the backdoor for sides like (but not necessarily) Norwich, Villa, Brighton and others :(

Interesting

How do you know who the right team to go down is?
The table is very tight with only 4 points separating the bottom 6 ( exclude Norwich )

This time last year we were only 1 point off safety, would we deserve to go down on a void season ?

agree... Leicester were in the bottom 3 with 6 to go then won the league the following season...
as for us we were in danger of relegation on the final day ... 71/72 stayed up by 1 point ..72/73 stayed up on goal difference.. 73/74 drew with palace a defeat would have relegated us... got relegated on last day of season..then promoted last game of season...before normal service was resumed in 77/78 ..a draw on the last day kept us up, a defeat would have relegated us.. 6 seasons on the bounce where our fate went to the very last day....and people seem to think you can call it with quarter of a season to go....not for me

I don't know and that's why I said "but not necessarily"

I am just 100% against the season effectively being rigged to give Liverpool the title, whilst gifting three teams (no matter who they might be) Premier League safety and all that entails financialky depriving three other teams (no matter who they might be) of the opportunity

It's certainly a tough one to overcome but a way should be found to complete the season in progress

Other views will differ
