Cardiff City favourite three and one to forget?

Sat May 02, 2020 1:54 pm

What’s everyone’s favourite three games watching Cardiff City in person (no particular order) and the one to forget, and why? Any particular stand out memories of the games?

Favourite

1. QPR at Wembley on 25th May 2003, Andy Campbell winner.

2. Hull City away in April 2018. Sean Morrison double put us in pole position for promotion and the scenes in the away end were mental.

3. Man City home on 29th January 1994. Nathan Blake curled home the winner against top flight opposition to secure a win for the third tier Bluebirds. My mate called in sick to work as he had a ticket, but unfortunately his boss seen him live on TV during the celebratory pitch invasion.

This was maybe a season after the Shrewsbury Town home game (deserves a special mention). Fans telling each other to be patient whilst adopting the kneeling position on the side of the pitch and a guy made the South Wales Echo for bearing his buttocks - whilst held up high by the Grange End crowd - and revealing an eyeball tattoo on each cheek. How things have changed! Does anyone else remember this?

To forget

1. Cardiff City 2 - 7 Cambridge United in April 1994. A league game in the third tier in front of about 3k fans. Post match drinks with friends were a regular occurrence back in the day and this helped ease the defeat slightly. It’s worth mentioning that I’ve missed many games between 1999 and 2014 due to working away, including play off games which were much more significant.

too difficult to get it down to 3 … was at all the games you've mentioned and all would be on a list but so many others as well.... I wouldn't have the Cambridge defeat anywhere near my worse experience though.. the relegation games were always terrible to take as were things like stoke in play offs and and missing out on the play offs at hillsborough

I missed the relegation games, apart from the recent one which I had a feeling was coming so made it easier. I did make BT Sports whilst chanting “Neil Warnock’s Barmy Army” and the words Cardiff relegated on the bottom of the screen, which pretty much sums up our passionate fan base. :bluescarf:

Also, missed the Leeds Cup game and Stoke in the Play-offs. Was there at Hillsborough, but we were so poor from the kick off we never looked like having a chance, but I agree with you though, the games with more to play for are naturally harder to witness a defeat.

Had this conversation with my mates on a personal Facebook group which I copy and pasted, and not one of them noticed the “Wembley” mistake. They’ll rinse me when they see it on here.

Let's start with the worst and there have been plenty but if I must pick one its the Blackpool playoff misery. The best three is more difficult. So beating Barnsley to be in a cup final the win against qpr (never liked them) that lifted us into the promised land tier 2 and just to cheat 2 man city defeats, Blakeys Cup curler and our 3_2 win over the when we thought we'd arrived in the big time. Great fun though doing that back turn shit. Don't hate man City BTW

Favourites:
1, Beating Leeds at Ninian Park in the cup on an amazing Sunday afternoon. They were top of the prem. and had been semi- finalist in the champions league the previous season, we were two tiers below them.
2, Winning the play-off game against QPR at the Millenium stadium,a great day in are own city.
3, 26th August 1961 3-2 win against Blackpool. My first game.

Biggest sickener:
1968 European cup winners cup semi-final 2nd leg against SV Hamburg at Ninian Park. The elation when Brian Harris scored and the depression when Uve Seeler scored.
But who cares if your a City fan your City fan good bad or what ever.

Thanks for your post. You are spot on Leeds in the cup and my first ever awy game to Palace in 75/6 take precedence over the man City games

In all fairness, if I had been at the Hamburg game (it was 11 years prior to my birth), that would have been my worst. Must have been a sickener!

I was out of the country for both the Leeds cup game and Blackpool play-off Final, but the later would have been the worst in my time watching Cardiff. I was lucky to watch both on TV in sunny climates, although Sam Hammam probably needed the helmet and body armour I was wearing watching the Leeds game more than I did.

half expected the Blackpool result as they had looked better than us in the lge games... plus it was karma..
the game ive come away from most annoyed { not so much gutted } was a last game of the season 0 -1 defeat to Orient... I came home and told the old man it was as if we had thrown the game..lack luster , no effort at all..that result relegated Blackpool.. whose view on proceedings were as mine and actually appealed to the FA...anyway orient stayed up, blackpool went down..and Wembley seemed to me like payback time..

A lot easier to name 3 games to forget and each of them have been named already: the Hamburg game, Stoke in the play-off semi and Blackpool in the play-off final.

As for the best, I would have to say beating Real Madrid, the Leicester play-off semi at home and beating QPR in the play-off final. These are not necessarily due to the way we played but because of the importance of the game itself.

If we were judging games purely on the quality of football played, that would require a lot more thought.

Beating Real Madrid is going to be an impossible one to better, unless anyone on this forum was alive and present at the 1927 FA Cup final. I was happy with an away win at Hull. I can only imagine the sheer enjoyment you must have experienced.

1. Losing to Hamburg - I was there for Real Madrid but remember this much more and was positive as a young kid cos I thought we'd be back in that cup every year, we'd keep that level of crowd and we did prove we could live with a top European side - went home proud. If only we could have kept that team together and built on it.

2. Beating Hereford in 76 - walked 4 miles home with my best mate singing all the way and thinking this is us back in the big time. Again, a team to be built on but left to drift. You just knew that team would score and it had talent running through its spine. Best kit ever.

3. Man U away on the last day. Did I ever think I'd see city beat them at their place and just for once it took the smile off their smug, glory-chasing entitled faces

One to forget - home vs Halifax 86 I think 1-1, awful, tiny crowd of die-hards and seeing the club on its arse just like so much of South Wales at the time after the miners' strike. Just like so many games of that period

1. Vs Real Madrid. Was only a kid but privileged to be right behind the goal when BC scored the famous goal.
2. Vs Barnsley to get to the FA Cup Final
3. Vs Crystal Palace to reach the League Cup Final. (Was at both legs). Hate Pailarse and their 'Ultras' :laughing6: :laughing6:
Was also funny to see weird blondy Palace fan on youtube watching the penalty shoot out, starting off all 'cocky' and gradually melting into a disappointed mess (sorry I can't find the link).

Worst was Blackpool pay off final. Never felt so gutted over a football match :banghead: :banghead:

Following the city has had so many ups and downs but the (fewer!) ups have more than compensated for the 'downs'.

Top of the list for me was Real Madrid. Followed by the Leeds game, but I will always remember Scunny away in 1993. What a day from start to finish, good weather, good trip up there, fantastic result 3-0 to win the title. Yes it was only 4th division, but it was a title.
Lowest point, and there have been a few, has to be last game at NP, Ipswich 0-3, team didn't turn up and I was more pissed off with that than even Stoke and Reading in play-offs or any relegation match. :bluescarf:

Best

1. Cardiff 3 Sheff Wed 2 - 1973 we went into the new season with high hopes of promotion after just missing out previously. We had a dreadful start to the campaign and found ourselfs close to the bottom. We went 2-1 behind after leading 1-0. When that happened we would give up. It happened every game we had up to then. By some miracle we scored twice in the last 10 minutes securing our first win of the season. It was the first time I ran onto the pitch to celebrate a goal.

2. Cardiff 6 Charlton 1 - Same season and we entertained Charlton who were bottom. Although we expected to win, we had to, we thrashed them. Everyone felt the love.

3. Cardiff 3 Man City 2 - Our Premier cameo. I struggled to enjoy any of that time due to the rebrand. The 90 minutes play of any game was the only release I got from it. You support your team regardless. This game I must have felt joy for at least 5 minutes after the game. Therefore I have to put it in my top 3.

Worse

Forest Green 1 Cardiff 0 - Nothing to do with the result. It was the first game since the rebrand. This is when the reality hit me and it has not been the same club since then.

It’s interesting to see some of these replies also include games that don’t necessarily involve promotion, relegation, later round FA Cup victories or anything of significance outside of a potential Cardiff City win.

One such game for myself was the Yeovil Town FA Cup game when Carl Dale scored against us and we drew 1-1 in Dec 98 or Jan 99. It was my last game as a regular until I moved back in 2014 and had a farewell for now feel to it. An emotional day not helped by the alcohol.

Another such game on a personal level was the 0-0 (I think) draw with Leyton Orient, which was my last match with my Grancha who was the person responsible for getting me down Ninian Park. He was to sadly drop dead aged 63 on Rhymney and Tredegar golf course on 13 Jan 1996, about a week after the game.
