The French prime minister, Edouard Philippe, has announced there will be no professional football in the country until at least September and the 2019-20 season in Ligue 1 and 2 will therefore end immediately.

Matches in France have been suspended since the start of March because of the coronavirus pandemic, with several players having agreed to defer up to 50% of their salaries to help their clubs through the crisis after broadcasters withheld TV rights. Whereas Germany’s Bundesliga looks set to resume next month behind closed doors, Philippe’s speech to the National Assembly on Tuesday confirmed that France was unwilling to risk a further outbreak by sanctioning the return of professional sport.

‘This is horrible': Cambuur stunned after dream season turns to dust.

“The big sporting affairs cannot occur before September,” he said. “The 2019-20 professional football season cannot return.”

The league’s governing body, the Ligue de Football Professionnel, is expected to meet next month to discuss how to end the season and resolve issues such as Champions League qualification, promotion and relegation. In the Netherlands the Eredivisie season was cancelled without any champions being crowned and with all 18 teams remaining in the division next season.

I think they should void this season but distribute more monies through the leagues

Agreed Wez,

The money from the Premier League should be shared with lower leagues :thumbright:

Agree with you both. It’s right and proper thing to do.

The premier league is all about one thing-MONEY,When ever has the big clubs helped out the smaller ones, very very odd occasions, the lesser leagues will cancel or null their season, the premier league will finish, one way or another, simply because of law suits

Totally disagree can’t see any reason why the premier league and championship could not start up again in say June if it’s safe to do so, obviously behind closed doors.

It will give the whole country a lift to see some live sport on tv

Think it should be September at the earliest The premier league don’t want to void the seasonThe reason if believed is that they will lose TV revenue of £750 million It is all about the money as simple as that
Don’t get me wrong I would love to watch some football but you know what will happen
People will go to peoples houses to watch matches or even go to the ground and stand outside Just like around 5,000 PSG fans did at beginning of the lead up to lockdown in France
I can imagine that Liverpool fans would be out celebrating if the win the league and in there thousand

I'm hoping they finish the season before they start another, but it's looking unlikely and that's a shame

Agree with you both.
But we all know how greedy the Premier League is.
Time they stepped up to the plate and do the right thing.

If its done right, the return of football, and other sport, can be a help in all of this.
PL and Chamionship can fulfil all its contractual TV obligations AND a whole load of other channels can air the other fixtures free to air.

There are no meaningful TV programmes now being made and the news is not exactly a tonic.

I think it's workable and this season should not be written off at this stage.

Working in a psychiatric unit I have to take that gamble every single day and so do millions of other workers

If everyone had that attitude no one would go to work and the economy and people’s livelihoods would collapse overnight

Sounds good. But can’t see sky being happy about having to pay for their matches while everyone else gets theirs for free. I think they’d want they money back I imagine the contract is pretty water tight.

That’s a really good point.

Why didnt they just say this current season has ended as things stand. So instead of cancelling the season altogether the easier way to actual phrase it is, THIS SEASON HAS FINISHED AS THE TABLE STANDS. But agree with what they done like I said in a previous post I did I dont think football in the UK will happen in 2020 due to the ongoing effects of the virus. Even though everyone hopes it happens I just think its too dangerous to actually make it happen because this sort of thing could cause another wave of this virus.

Yep, agree with this and the UK Government are far more 'on-side' (excuse the pun) than the French Government were

Who is right? I guess only time will tell but for me, every effort should be made to finish the current season; no matter when

Spot on. Those clubs in the PL who faced the possibility of relegation would be saved for one more season at least.

Therefore the money which is normally paid out for where you finish in the PL should not be paid to the PL clubs but instead diverted to all 3 leagues within the EFL.

What insurers in their right minds are going to cover a contact sport in this pandemic...really ? Money determines everything and are teams going to expose their prize assets to potential Covid19 infection? I and see lawsuits galore !

Finish this season whenever possible, even in a years time. Then decide what to do with next season. Even if it means scrapping next season.

How can anyone guarantee an individual players safety getting paid to play a contact sport??

Broken bones, head injuries, on field heart attacks??

If every workplace had to guarantee their employees safety nobody would ever be allowed to go to work

They not contagious diseases though.
The problem would come when infected players are covered up.
It’s a nightmare situation I’m afraid. I have no clue what to do other than cancel football till vaccine is found. Or some extremely stringent rules in place.

What if the vaccine takes 18 months?? 90% of U.K. clubs would not survive and would go bankrupt

The whole Country will be back in work within 3 months vaccine or no vaccine
