Deaths in care homes have doubled, according to the ONS
Deaths in care homes doubled in the two weeks to 17 April, up to 7,316 a week. One in five deaths took place in care homes, but the proportion of care home deaths is rising - from one in ten on April 2 to more than one in three on April 17.
Only just over three quarters of all Covid-19 deaths occurred in hospitals, down from one in 10 two weeks previously.
More than 22,000 deaths in England and Wales recorded in a week
More than 22,000 deaths occurred in the week to 17 April - more than double the average for the time of year, according to the latest data from the Office for National Statistics. It was an increase of almost 4,000 deaths on the week before, and 11,854 above the five-year average
It is the highest weekly total since 1993. Of all deaths registered to 17 April, almost 9,000 mentioned Covid-19 on the death certificate (39.2% of all deaths), up from just over 6,000 (a third of all deaths) the week before.
