Cardiff City and Swansea City will be able to make five substitutions instead of three for their final nine games of the Championship season, according to reports.

Given the lengthy lay-off football has endured owing to the coronavirus outbreak and the pressure of ensuring next season will kick off on time, it is likely we will experience a heavy fixture congestion when the league finally resumes.

But, according to The Times, the International FA Board are mindful of players' welfare and are set to propose a rule change for two additional substitutions to be made as a special circumstance for the remainder of this season.

They report that while the rule will be a temporary measure, there have been calls for that to become a permanent law change, but IFAB secretary Lukas Brud said the governing body are, at present, exploring only a short-term lifting of the current rules.

“We are looking at a temporary dispensation of the law to make it more flexible to protect players," IFAB secretary Lukas Brud told The Times.

"We hope to take a decision by the end of this week.”

What this could mean in real terms is that Championship teams with greater squad depth could see a huge benefit to this proposed rule tweak.

For the Bluebirds, we have seen Neil Harris pack his bench with attacking options of late, with the likes of Josh Murphy, Robert Glatzel and Danny Ward barely being afforded a look-in.

Couple that with the likely return of crucial forward men Lee Tomlin and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing upon resumption of the campaign and Harris' five options off the bench could be a truly terrifying prospect for opposing teams.

For Steve Cooper's Swans, meanwhile, it could see an extension to his feted youth policy be utilised further in the closing weeks.

We have seen the manager bring through the likes of Ben Cabango, Liam Cullen and Jordan Garrick this term and Cooper might see two extra substitutions as a means to blood more youngsters in the final stages of the season, which is sure to benefit both the club and the players in the long term.

The plan stipulates that all the substitutions must be made within three slots, plus the half-time interval in an attempt to curb the number of stoppages that are made during matches.

FIFA also said that, when applicable, a sixth substitution would be used in stoppage time of cup competitions.

“One concern in this regard is that the higher-than-normal frequency of matches may increase the risk of potential injuries due to a resulting player overload," FIFA said in a statement.

"Each team would now be given the possibility to use up to five substitutions during the match, with the possibility of an additional substitution remaining during extra time, where relevant.”

Sounds a good idea actually, they could change half the outfield team!

Great, can we change half of ours for half of Real Madrid's?

and with 5 minutes to play and 1 nil up, just start bringing on the subs. Instead of bringing on the 3rd sub in injury time to waste time, you can bring on 3 !

Great if you're winning but very frustrating for the losing team ! :bluescarf:

So I think they've tried to stop any additional time-wasting?

This is actually quite a sensible idea. Although a restart in any form, with or without fans, seems unlikely before September IMHO
