‘ PREMIER LEAGUE / JUNE / BEHIND CLOSED DOORS

Tue Apr 28, 2020 7:45 am

The Premier League will hold further talks this week, as it targets a return behind closed doors in June - and it has the backing of the government.

All 20 clubs will hold their latest conference call on Friday, armed with the knowledge that the country's political leaders are also keen for the season to resume when possible.

Sky Sports

The Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Secretary Oliver Dowden said in the House of Commons: "I personally have been in talks with the Premier League, with a view to getting football up and running as soon as possible in order to support the whole football community.

“June is what the Premier League Chiefs are looking at, with matches played behind closed doors.”

Gary Neville has warned footballers to "get their heads around" the idea of playing behind closed doors.

"It's going to be strange," Neville said on The Football Show. "It's an awful experience when you are used to playing in front of big crowds. The Premier League lives off its stadium experience, the adrenaline gets pumping for the players and the fans get behind it.

"But we are going to be playing behind closed doors for months and months - probably into next year. We have to get our heads around that."

Football not football without fans. I really hope this isn’t the the case but looking more likely.

It's all ifs and buts at the moment and this is an extraordinary situation. If they could start again by early June, even behind closed doors to get the season finished, then it would mean finishing by maybe mid July. If the new season started say in September, that would give you about 36 weeks or so til end of April/early May. Ditch the league Cup for one season and cut down (or cut out) the international breaks, which no one likes, no replays in the FA cup, then I think you'd be in with a chance of getting back on track. There would be plenty of mid week slots for European ties as they are played mid week anyway. The players have had a break now, and everyone would be in the same boat as regards transfers and pre season etc. Playing behind closed doors is not ideal, but if televised, better than nothing, and I don't half miss football like everyone else.

I didn't think we would have any games this season, but it looks like they are really keen to get it back on so maybe?

How on earth can you play a contact sport before a vaccine is found?? I am all ears ! There are matters of club insurance, medical issues, transport arrangements , event management.Realistically I do not believe there will be sport before the vaccine is released at the earliest January 2021

The fact that it’s being talked about suggests that they have some sort of idea. Testing maybe?

everyone has forgotten all about ..fucked without a vaccine mate..
or at least that how it seems.. countries are relaxing lockdowns and almost all either have or are drawing up exit strategies...
how can a country that went into the hardest of lockdowns on a day that 63 people had died and 1100 had been infected come up with an exit plan 2 months later on a day when 7 times as many died and 4 times as many got infected..?

Former Wales player and manager Mark Hughes says finishing the football season behind closed doors is the "best-case scenario" for the game.

The ex-Manchester United and Barcelona striker claimed there was "no way" supporters would be able to watch the conclusion of the current season.

But Hughes believes the remaining games should be played so promotion and relegation can be decided fairly.

"It's going to be very, very difficult," he told BBC Radio Wales.

"Everybody is trying to make it happen, but the best outcome for sport is that players return to playing competitive games."
