What defines an Asian as an Asian ?

Fri Apr 24, 2020 8:36 am

I always thought that an Asian was somebody who was born/from an Asian country (ie- the continent of Asia )?

I was taught in school that there were 7 Continents on Earth: The America's, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australasia, Arctic and Antarctica.

So, how is it that Pakistanis, Indians, Bangladeshis, sri Lankans, and other SOUTH Asian people Born/From/Living in Britain Have Hijacked the word Asian exclusively for themselves when people born/from/living in Britain from SOUTH EASTERN Asia (China, Japan,Thailand, Philippines,Myanmar(Burma),Indonesia, Cambodia, Vietnam, South Korea, etc) Feel they have no choice but to identify themselves as Asian on official forms, etc.

For example: Imagine yourself being from Thailand or Philippines and somebody asks you where you are Born/from/living and you say ASIA and the person says back "you don't look like an Pakistani "

It seems to be the norm here in Britain that being an ASIAN, means that you are Born/From/Living exclusively from South Asian countries ?

This thinking is now rife throughout Government and British institutions - The last British Census in 2011 had an ethnicity section on how you would describe yourself as Black? White? Asian? Mixed race? Chinese? ???? (thought china was in Asia) and the infamous "Other" (I always fill in "HUMAN BEING" in those type of questions).

It's much the same as us Welsh People being called English whilst abroad

British or Welsh/British that's me. :old:

The first time I heard the term Asian was when Colonel Idi Amin expelled all the Ugandan Asians from the country, they were mostly from the sub continent whose forefathers had emigrated to Uganda.
They came to our school in their hundreds, but i must say they were immaculately dressed and very well educated when they got here.

Over here in the US it's the other way around, Asian is thought of as Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese etc.

I worked with a bloke and his son back in the 70's, they were Ugandan Asians, expelled by Idi Amin. They settled in Riverside, two of the nicest people you could meet, no bitterness at all despite losing their home and all their possessions, they loved Cardiff and its people.

That's my experience of the Ugandan Asians; genuinely good people!

Not sure what the OP is up to tbh; but he clearly has too much time on his hands, if this is the best he can come up with to sate his need to converse with real world folk! :laughing6:

Sven, I am not up to anything mate. I just saw a report on BBC news today that Prince Charles has started an emergency fund for Asians Abroad and went on to say that what he really meant was a fund for the Indian subcontinent and thought that it was a bit of a cheek to call it an Asian Abroad fund when it does not help equally vulnerable peoples in other Asian countries (Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam, Myanmar, Cambodia, etc).

And, yes, I do have too much time on my hands, you are right on that one.
