UK social restrictions 'to remain for rest of year'
Some social restrictions are expected to remain in the UK for at least the rest of the year, the government's chief medical adviser has said.
Prof Chris Whitty said it was "wholly unrealistic" to expect life would suddenly return to normal soon.
He said the ideal way out would be via a "highly effective vaccine" or treatment drugs but said the chances of having these within the next year was "incredibly small".
"This disease is not going to be eradicated, it is not going to disappear," he said, at the government's daily coronavirus briefing.
"So we have to accept that we are working with a disease that we are going to be with globally... for the foreseeable future."

Unless something arrives quickly in form of cure for the virus I can’t see any major events being held with a crowd this year Even if we relax the current social distance rules I can’t see them allowing mass gatherings
With our land mass being less than half that of countries like Spain we need to get stricter on social distancing than we currently are and not look at relaxing it
We are in for a horrid time as lessons not learnt and people seem to think our number of daily deaths will start to drop quickly They will not I think we will still be seeing daily deaths in the 100s still in August if not longer from Covid in UK
