As the Uk, virtually lifts its pretend lockdown

Thu Apr 23, 2020 9:38 am

70 B & Q Stores now open, roads getting busier, more parks open, people more relaxed in the UK, even though the Uk has caught up or even past Spain & Italy on the death toll (if you include Care homes / private homes) , yet Spain & Italy continue with a strict lockdown, I really hope you are right.

100% No European Countries will want Uk residents visiting them at this rate this year.
(I get on fb dozens of messages asking will we be able to come on holiday this year to Spain, NO at this rate)

On morning tv

Piers Morgan: "This is not lockdown in the Uk, we havent had a proper lockdown. "

The Uk made out they knew better than all the Countries that advised them, well Sadly that was bullshit as UK 3 weeks behind on the Virus, yet caught up and even over taking other Countries, I honestly cant believe what I was watching on morning tv.

I am not a big fan of Piers Morgan, but he was rightly in shock as well.

Police dont wear face masks when they talking to the UK public, social distancing is not being listened to and has not for many from day one.

I know I have gone on and on at the Uk, but its because I have seen the devastation its done to countries like Spain and was begging for the Uk, to learn by it. Those that argued continuously against me, kept stating, Uk is NO where near as bad as Spain & Italy, well you are weeks behind and sadly now are even worse than these countries

It looks like masks will be brought in to the Uk to be warn, Govt once again doing a uturn.

The Mortuary capacity in the Uk is sadly over run, two coffins are in vehicle for funerals

We as a nation cant handle a proper lockdown. With lack of staff and policing around the country. We simply have not got enough police to do what Spain and Italy have done. So people in the UK are more relaxed than ever because of the fact that the UK cant simply do a full lockdown because of lack of staff to patrol streets.

This is why I’m annoyed my wife is being forced back to work next Monday. She’s not an essential worker as she’s a cleaner in a factory that manufactures cars. The workers have been told “it’s good for the economy, so we are reopening.”

Sam, your right on this the UK cant do it or handle a proper lockdown and for this they will sadly suffer by far the worst

I for one condemn this current Govt and yet I admit voted for them as it was a choice between them or Corbyn which he would of been even worse.

Plus common sense by Uk public not used by the minority.

Lockdown or partial restrictions are working where I live.I am two hundred yards from a beach and 99% of the people save a few kids are playing by the rules..Regular police patrols, they take index plates and run checks, those vehicles from out of town are issued warnings. In short its working save care homes which are a nightmare everywhere. Here the numbers are low thank goodness. As for the lifting of restrictions well six more weeks and we will have serious problems with enforcement. Some scenarios:

Lockdown until Xmas not feasible.Thousands of small/medium companies will sink causing calamity and 5-6 million unemployed. Equally people will not be prepared to put up with this

If government insists on the above borrowing to cover wages will ensure crippling debt similar to World War 2 will be loaded onto our children via higher taxation with all that involves

People do not believe what they are being told by third rate incompetent politicians

Probable that restrictions will be lifted gradually including Pubs/Cafes/Restaurants by the autumn

The Government will take the deaths when facing the alternative horror of an economic armageddon the likes of which we have not seen in our lifetimes

I still meet people who wonder whether their Spanish hols are safe in July....!!! As for sport forget it until late 2021

My brother worked in travel for twenty years at a senior level including out of Palma his contact told him this week Majorca's Hoteliers will probably remain closed for this season up to 85%, due to no incoming traffic from the UK/Germany.This is from an extremely good source his old is company directly impacted by the crisis

My personal opinions are of no consequence here , but this what I see and all this talk about "listening to the science" will evaporate at some point the decision will be a hard nosed political/economic one

B&Q reopens stores closed amid lockdown

B&Q has reopened dozens of UK stores as lockdown measures remain in place.

After a trial period, 61 shops, including those in Cardiff, Manchester and Aberdeen, have been allowed to reopen.

The DIY group said it has brought in "social distancing controls", such as capping the number of customers in-store.

On Thursday, other UK firms, such as Aston Martin and Taylor Wimpey, said they would return to work in May.

B&Q had been closed since the end of March after the government introduced lockdown measures to try to contain the spread of Covid-19.

However, hardware stores were included on the government's list of essential retailers that were allowed to trade under the restrictions.

They don't want to go, mate, there was a poll on Preston something like 80% of people don't want to fly until a vaccine has been found, it will be devasting for Spain and Italy and with total lockdown, it will be interesting to see what's left in a year?

All Governments need to balance a fine line between keeping the death rate as low as possible, while not overloading the health service, and trying to ensure the economy doesn't go completely bust and that there are still some jobs to go to when we finally beat COVID 19.

Don't forget the bigger Countries are going to have more deaths, but that our death rate per Million is half of Spains.

I beginning to feel that the Government is looking at Sweden and feeling that the original plan of Herd Immunity was the way to go. With one eye on the economic cost to the country and the Government confident that the NHS will not be overwhelmed it is my opinion that by stealth the lock down is being slowly lifted.

Re: As the Uk, virtually lifts its pretend lockdown

Thu Apr 23, 2020 12:47 pm

From a Social Darwinian perspective the "Herd Immunity" theory makes sense. I believe Matthew Paris wrote an article for the Times alluding to that. In short millions of infected people , most will not even know they have had it possible 250-500000 dead.
Ghastly in itself and brutal, however within this there is the assumption of no reinfection for those individuals who had copped it.Well they do not know that this would be the case !! Ergo mass infection Virus peters out.Now from a humanitarian perspective unthinkable go tell any grieving relative that the Herd theory is correct!!! I for one would not want to call this but I firmly believe the economic considerations will always outweigh alternative solutions.

This is doing the rounds this morning regarding Sweden and what the predictions would have been, based on the data they gave for UK driving towards the lockdown... OK partial lockdown

They need the antibody test(95% or so)..that’ll be the key to it.

Didn’t we go into lockdown a day after Germany..not sure, but I can’t see the airlines taking passengers until they can be sure no one is infected. So there may not be any flights anyway.

EuroMOMO Bulletin, Week 16, 2020
Pooled mortality estimates from the EuroMOMO network continue to show a marked increase in excess all-cause mortality overall for the participating European countries, coinciding with the current COVID-19 pandemic. This overall excess mortality is, however, driven by a very substantial excess mortality in some countries, primarily seen in the age group of 65 years and above, but also in the age group of 15-64 years.

https://www.euromomo.eu/bulletins/2020-16/

The graph in the week 16 bulletin still shows that 2017-18, 2016-17, 2019-20 are the three winters with the most deaths above the normal range in that order, out of the last four winters. Therefore, more died in 2017-18 and 2016-17 winters than the current winter which has the Coronavirus.

IMHO the UK government were initially heading for 'Herd Immunity', but due to negative media and opposition comments, plus a worry about the NHS coping, changed tack. Also, the government had to consider the financial implications of a lock down and the fact that unless other countries follow suit, there's increased chance of a second wave. However, the bottom line is that if the PRC and the WHO hadn't refuted Taiwan's warning of a HTH transmissible virus, there would have been 95% fewer cases and COVID-19 could have been stopped in it's tracks. Also, Blair's, Brown's and Cameron's governments should have taken heed of the warnings from SARS, MERS, Swine Flu, Bird Flu and Ebola. May's and Boris's governments were hamstrung by Brexit previous to the pandemic.

Just for clarification, even though I am suffering financially, and may even end up bankrupt, I'm still glad of the lock down. I have close family and friends who may well owe their lives due to the lock down.

Spanish Govt Apologies to the Children of Spain

Iglesias began the conference by apologizing to children in Spain over the confusion over the conditions under which children will be allowed to leave their homes.

They will also be able to go out with toys, a ball or a scooter but they cannot go to play areas in parks
DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER PABLO IGLESIAS
“We have not been completely clear about how you will be able to leave as of Sunday,” said Iglesias. “I know the confinement has not been easy for you and I want to thank you. You have played an important role in the fight against the coronavirus so that we can return as a society and all of society owes you a very big round of applause.”

The Cabinet announced on Tuesday that children aged 14 and under would only be able to leave the house with one parent in order to visit the supermarket, pharmacy or bank, and would not be able to go out for walks. The announcement was met with widespread indignation, both from politicians and members of the public alike, among other reasons, given that the risk of infection is greater in a closed space.

In an abrupt U-turn, the Health Minister Salvador Illa said on Tuesday night that the government would, in fact, allow children to go for walks.

Only time will tell which country and government handled the crisis the best

The simple fact is that nobody, even the so called experts can be sure of the best way forward

What I go know is virus or no virus the U.K. economy cannot absorb a 5 or 6 month lockdown without catastrophic consequences for job losses, bankruptcies and future crippling tax rises for everyone

The whole of Europe, USA and probably the world has been backed into a corner and will have to loosen restrictions and quite quickly

Let's not pretend Spain have done well annis even with there hard lock down. All your doing on here is knocking the UK. 95 percent of people are doing what they should and there is no hard evidence that social distancing whilst having a walk or run or trip to the supermarket is a huge difference. As for roads, from someone who is using them daily the roads have 20 percent of the traffic compared to normal in Cardiff. For what takes me over an hour from penarth to Caerphilly I'm now doing in 30 minutes and whilst ofcourse there are Cars on the road a lot of the traffic is lorries, vans, utilities etc. Only around 2000 deaths are outside of England with ofcourse London being the worst. Has everything been done right.? In hindsight No but im fed up of coming here to see you say Spain getting better etc were doing it right and constantly bashing the UK. Also yes numbers will be higher as I'm sure will be the same for all countries. But there are lots of deaths being put down to covid as they had it but would have died anyway. I know of 3 personally in last 3 weeks

Agree seems like coz annis and Spain is in lockdown everyone has too ,Spain s death toll is horrendous for there population ,most people are keeping to the measures the government put in place the roads are dead ,going for a walk bot interacting with other people will not infect you

Anyone advocating an even longer and more draconian lockdown is going to have to explain why Swenden which has had the least draconian lockdown in Western Europe has less than half the number of deaths per head of the population than Britain Spain France Italy and Belgium. If all these dire predictions of how many deaths will occur without a lockdown why isn't it happening in Sweden. It seems to me that when this whole thing is done and dusted Sweden my well be seen to have done best of all. Much more likely to have herd immunity too which means they will be less affected by any future outbreaks.

That's right wez. If you took London out of the equation it would have been a different story but London gets so many visitors internationally it was inevitable to be the epicentre.
It's the way you say."pretend lock down" annis and other things is very patronising. People a lot more intelligent than you or I have a lot more information than you or I.
