Spain to extend emergency lockdown (again)

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced today that he will ask parliament to agree to a two-week extension of the state of emergency lockdown, until June 21, newspaper El Pais reports.

As it stands, Spain is expecting to welcome international tourists from July 1. No word yet on whether that date, too, will be moved back.

Sanchez said during a video-conference with government leaders that this - now the sixth extension - would be the last one, given Spain’s overall infection rates have now reduced dramatically – rising 271 overnight to 239,228 yesterday. Its death toll rose by four to 27,125, the health ministry said.

Spain, one of the worst-hit countries, declared a statement of emergency on March 14 and lockdown measures were far stricter than in the UK. No outdoor exercise was permitted and children were initially confined inside all day. Region-by-region, restrictions have been easing in recent weeks.

Robert Jenrick starts by confirming the latest daily figures.

He says there were 1,936 new confirmed cases on Saturday.

That is the first time in ages that the figure has dipped below 2,000. However, there are two important caveats. The figures always tend to be lower over the weekend and they only include people who have actually tested positive.

According to the UK’s statistics body, the daily infection rate is close to 8,000.

Spain has recorded its lowest number of new infections in almost three months, with 96 new cases reported on Sunday. Just two deaths were recorded.

By comparison the UK recorded 1,936 new confirmed cases and 113 deaths today. In Italy the numbers were 355 infections and 75 deaths.

Spain's figures are a massive fall from early April, when the country recorded 950 deaths and several thousand new cases in a single day.

The country has already begun easing its lockdown restrictions, which were among the strictest in Europe. But the government remains cautious and the prime minister has requested a two-week extension to the state of emergency.

More than 27,000 people have died in Spain since the pandemic began and around 240,000 cases have been recorded.

Historic deaths not included in today's Government toll

The number of people in the UK who have died after testing positive for Covid-19 is 556 higher than the equivalent total announced yesterday, although the Government is reporting the day-on-day change as 111.

The reason for the difference in these two figures is to do with how deaths are being incorporated into historic data retrospectively.

Yesterday's cumulative total announced by the Department of Health was 38,489, which is 556 below today's cumulative total of 39,045.But since yesterday, 445 deaths have been added to the historic data.

These additional deaths are linked to cases that have been identified through testing that has been carried out by commercial partners, rather than testing that has been done in NHS and Public Health England laboratories.

Rather than include these 445 deaths in today's increase, the Department of Health has incorporated them within the previous cumulative total, to create a notional total for yesterday of 38,934 (38,489 + 445).

The difference between this notional total of 38,934 and today's total of 39,045 is 111, and this is the one being reported by the Government.

Yesterday, the Health Secretary noted the "significant progress" Britain had made in its fight against coronavirus, after Sunday recorded the lowest daily death toll since lockdown began at the end of March.

However, with a further 324 people having succumbed to the disease in the last 24 hours, Hancock's message returned to the somber note of "still some way to go" when addressing today's daily death toll.

Today's rise reflects the "weekend effect", were reporting lags behind, he says.

Sweden admits it DID get it wrong on coronavirus: Expert behind country's refusal to enter lockdown says he would have imposed tougher restrictions 'if we knew what we know now'

Anders Tegnell, Sweden's state epidemiologist, has admitted he made the wrong call on the country's coronavirus lockdown for the first time

Tegnell admits too many people have died after he shunned mandatory rules

He now believes Sweden should have taken harsher measures to stop the spread

Sweden's state epidemiologist has admitted he made the wrong call on the country's coronavirus lockdown for the first time.

Anders Tegnell, who was behind the decision to shun full lockdown in favour of voluntary social distancing measures, now admits that too many people have died under his strategy.

Asked to battle the same disease again with the benefit of hindsight, Tegnell said he would bring in tougher measures to slow the spread.

Spain: State of emergency extended for two weeks

In Spain, lawmakers have voted today to extend a state of emergency for two weeks - the measures allow the government to restrict movement and other rights as part of its fight against Covid-19.

The Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, said that Spain has "overcome the worst of the pandemic" and declared that he won't seek further extensions beyond the end date of the special powers at midnight on June 21.

Sanchez also said that a new government decree next week will set out procedures to handle any resurgence of the outbreak after most of the restrictions, first imposed on March 14, are lifted.

Spain reported its first death from the coronavirus since Sunday today, taking the total toll to 27,128 Covid-19 amid some 240,000 confirmed infections -

Death toll 'lowest working week day level', says Shapps

The official death toll from Covid-19 now stands at 39,904, Mr Shapps said.

"That’s an increase of 176 fatalities since yesterday and that's the lowest working week day level of fatalities when measured by a seven day rolling average, the daily number of deaths currently stands at 241, down from a peak of 943 on the 14 April," he says.

Was reading earlier, that spain has added an extra 12000 deaths to their tally, taking them to 43,000 in total?? And that the day that o deaths were recorded at least 17 died in Madrid and another municipality according to a Spanish expert, and he went on to say that by saying there were 0 deaths is sending the wrong message to the Spanish public,if this is true, then it throws out the question of how effective their strict lockdown was? These are not my figures, but taken from an article I read (the guardian)shocking if correct, as I have said before we will, never know the true figures, and that is a sad fact, this is not having a go at spain (the figures are twisted the world over imho)but it is a spain v uk topic,so think it has relevance. :old: :bluebird:

Annis, are the reported amended figures for mainland spain correct? As you know,I have always said I don't believe the figures of any country,as there are so many disparities in the recordings, from country to country.and I stand by what I have been saying regards a 2nd wave, these gatherings, full beaches etc in england, will lead to the rest of us being locked down again,a bit unfair on us imho, not saying wales has been perfect in its behaviour, but we certainly (until recently ) were behaving a lot more sensibly than over the border!! I have just been to see my mother, who as you know has been in lockdown for 14 weeks now, with us only lately being able to sit with her face to face, now she wil, be getting ANOTHER letter, asking her to shield herself till august :? I am getting concerned about her mental state now,f@ck knows how she will be by then?? Trouble is mate,as we agree the lockdown didn't go far enough, regards tough enforcement of the rules, poxy fines, and totally confusing messages from all directions of the government.to me this is not a scientific approach any longer,it's all about getting the economy up and running again.I find it strange that the largest effected area (england) was let out of lockdown first, rather than the countries who had fewer deaths, and infection? ? To me ,it's almost as if the government has almost given up listening altogether, as you have said previously (and myself) this government has blood on its hands,by its total failings in heeding the warnings from other countries, and going above the scientists (who they got onboard! ) heads, and deciding to ignore all advice being given, both at the beginning and now!! :old: :bluebird:

Britain is facing a quarantine backlash as France, Germany, Greece and Spain have said they will restrict UK residents entering as they reopen after lockdown - unless the UK drops its quarantine or reduces its coronavirus infection rates.

UK records 38 more deaths

The Department of Health and Social Care said 41,736 people had died in hospitals, care homes and the wider community after testing positive for coronavirus in the UK as of 5pm on Sunday, up by 38 from 41,698 the day before.

The Government figures do not include all deaths involving Covid-19 across the UK, which is thought to have passed 52,000.

The DHSC also said in the 24-hour period up to 9am on Monday, 93,163 tests were carried out or dispatched, with 1,056 positive results.

Overall, a total of 6,866,481 tests have been carried out and 296,857 cases have been confirmed positive.

The figure for the number of people tested has been "temporarily paused to ensure consistent reporting" across all methods of testing.
