The eye-opening sums of money Cardiff City and Swansea City are set to lose as football faces watershed moment

Former Premier League chairman spells out the stark financial situation if matches continue to be played behind closed doors

Cardiff City and Swansea City could lose huge sums of money if games go behind closed doors

Cardiff City and Swansea City could each lose more than £2.5m if their nine remaining Championship fixtures are played behind closed doors, according to former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan.

Football, as well as many other industries, finds itself in financial strife owing to the fallout of the coronavirus pandemic, with all leagues currently either on hold or having already been postponed.

While there has been no definite return date set, it is expected we will not see live football in this country for quite some time.

And when that does happen, it is likely the remaining fixtures, or at least the bulk of them, will be played behind closed doors.

There is a possibility, of course, that supporters will not be permitted to attend for the remainder of the campaign as governing bodies attempt to grapple with social distancing and rolling out a return to normalcy.

But Jordan has warned of the devastating financial impact that will have on not only the Premier League but the three Football League divisions below it.

"If games go behind closed doors for the remainder of this season, the average Premier League club will lose £12m when you include season-ticket refunds," he wrote in his Sun column.

"That figure will be much more for big clubs like Manchester United and Liverpool.

"The average Championship club will lose £2.6m, while League One and Two sides stand to lose £975,000 and £510,000 respectively."

There have been reports we might not see football stadia packed out for more than a year, with social habits expected to change and people applying more caution when it comes to social gatherings.

The gravity of that potential outcome, in financial terms, could see the likes of Swansea and Cardiff lose up to £13m if games are played behind closed doors next season, the talkSPORT pundit claimed.

"Without wanting to be a doomsday merchant, there’s a possibility that stadia will still be empty in a year’s time with social distancing burnt into the public psyche and the wait for vaccines," he added.

"Then what? Premier League clubs, on average, will lose £50m minimum. The Big Six will lose double that, at least.

"That’s over 30 per cent of their turnover, giving the Prem a loss of £1BILLION.

"Championship clubs will lose an average of £13m (£312m combined), League One clubs £4.5m (£103.5m combined) and League Two clubs £2m (£48m combined)."

And those fears appear to be corroborated by EFL chairman Rick Parry.

According to Burton Albion chairman Ben Robinson, Parry admitted he doesn't believe fans will be allowed back in stadiums until 2021.

"There is a lot of uncertainty. We don't know when the season will be concluded, if it is," Robinson told Sky Sports' The Football Show.

"An even bigger concern is about next season. In the meeting yesterday, Rick Parry, the EFL chairman, said that he thought the season might not start until next year when the games are played with fans attending. You can imagine the financial implications of that are considerable.

"He didn't think crowds would be in stadiums until 2021, that was his personal view. It could take as long as that to get gate receipts flowing back into clubs."

Jordan, however, did offer some contingency plans for clubs to recoup some of its lost sums, chiefly pertaining to how they roll out their digital and streaming services during games.

The 52-year-old businessman suggested that clubs work diligently to enhance their media output and offer digital season tickets.

He believes clubs could offset some losses by offering streaming sponsorship and merchandising, while giving fans the virtual experience of added stadium noise and expert pundits to commentate and analyse the games on their sites.

I will be quite to happy, to give up any refund on mine and my son’s season tickets, if it helps reduce the money lost by the club. Also, the money I’m allowed to spend in the shop, can stay with the club aswell.

I’m more than happy to give up my ST money too mate.
If safe enough to do so I’d love to see some footy though (behind closed doors)

There’s no way certain clubs can survive until 2021 without any match day income

Clubs without parachute payments or wealthy owners are going to go bankrupt

Don't think many will ask for a refund but football's in for a rough ride until a vaccination is widely available I fear.

The club will get zero from me and I will give any refund to NHS fund.

Simple way around all this is that players and directors take a 50% pay cut or industry goes bust. I'd love to manage and get by on 5000 a week!!!!! 1 less sports car or 1 less house to rent out perhaps.

Like I've said numerous times the club and many others couldn't give a dam about you. We are just a seat number and milked for every penny we got.

Surely all the club have to do is make the games available live on the internet to season ticket holders. That way we can watch the games at home, the club can always pipe through some artificial crowd noise. Sky get their matches to broadcast, punters can bet.

Well done buddy! Makes you wonder why the average fan on average incomes can make gestures of good will but well paid greedy players can't?

Maybe the clubs should be allowed to sell TV season tickets for 2020/21 season? Probably Sky would be pissed off but I'm sure there is a temporary deal to be made where non-Sky Sports Subscribers could purchase TV season tickets at full price and those with a Sky Sports Subscription could buy one at a reduced rate?

Also the subscription could include (at an extra cost) for away games which would go to the home team just like it does with gate money.

Well, you re obviously welcome to your opinion but I would hope that any money saved, would go towards helping the background staff, who are not on thousands of pounds per week.

I don't get it either... in my time ive bought STs that I knew id not get close to value for money from.. turned down comps and dragged no end of people along to try to get them hooked {succeeded with a few too } … and I know quite a few people who have done similar.. this idea that the club should be eternally grateful for my support and in some way should reward me attitude is alien … we are fans, and im very proud of being a Cardiff fan.. maybe he isn't a fan ,just someone that googled blue birds one day and stumbled on the forum while looking for porn...?
