The true number of coronavirus victims in the UK may still be 41 per cent higher than daily Government statistics are letting on.

Weekly data published today by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed that at least 13,121 people had died in England and Wales by April 10.

Department of Health statistics had, by that date, announced only 9,288 fatalities - the backdated deaths increased the total by 41.2 per cent. That suggests the death toll of 16,509 confirmed yesterday could actually be more like 23,000.

And care homes in England and Wales had recorded the deaths of at least 1,644 residents by April 10 - today's figures reveal one of the first real glimpses of the crisis unfolding in the care industry.

The number of coronavirus deaths in care homes has doubled

The statistics show the total number of deaths in care homes has doubled in the last month, when first deaths linked to COVID-19 were registered.

The figures show 4,927 deaths in the week ending April 10, up from 2,471 a week, a month earlier.

Separate estimates have suggested at least 7,500 deaths in care homes had been linked to coronavirus by last weekend.

Totally agree. There isn't a Government in the world which hasn't under reported the deaths which are linked to COVID-19.

In fairness our Government stated right at the start that the figures of deaths in hospital would be the benchmark and I'm sure this was the same in all other countries so comparisons could be made. I presume this is because patients could be tested for the decease and we would have certainty about whether COVID-19 was a contributing factor.

So unfortunately deaths in Nursing Homes are a bit of a Red Herring for now because testing doesn't happen in Nursing Homes and it is left to the GP's discretion whether COVID-19 is put on the death certificate.

How that affects the numbers is up for speculation.
