Just been on BBC 1 News 6pm

Monday 20th April 2020

The Mayor of Middlesbrough has shut all parks because of the public’s behaviour and people not listening to the very simple guidelines

So those who continually deny it’s happening/ fake news my arse

BBC went to the parks all
Locked up and then they interviewed the Mayor and locals

Why are some on here always consistently saying it’s not happening

Same in Newport - 'No plans' to reopen city's gated parks

Newport council says it has no plans to reopen its gated parks during the coronavirus lockdown, despite a backlash from residents.

It follows the comments of a UK government minister who said parks and cemeteries should remain open.

However, their call only applies to councils in England, whereas in Wales the decision lies in the hands of the individual local authorities.

Residents of Newport have taken to social media to complain, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Some pointed out that parks in Cardiff and other parts of Wales remained open while one resident claimed that "forcing people to walk on the street" instead of parks increased the risk of breaching advice on social distancing.

In response, Newport council said it took a decision last month to “close its gated parks and cemeteries, except for funeral services, in the interest of all residents, the emergency services and staff”.

“This decision was not taken lightly but we hope people understand that the priority has to be keeping people safe above everything else," the council said in a statement.

“Some residents continue to ignore social distancing advice and all decisions taken are based wholly on risk.

“If you choose to use areas of local open-access recreational land, please ensure you adhere to the guidance – unless you are with members of your household, gatherings of more than two people are banned and you should keep two metres apart from others at all times.”

Vale have kept all parks closed.

I can see it both ways really, while play areas have to be closed open spaces being open does allow people to walk at a safer distance, the problem is people going to far, making it a trip or travelling to these areas.

im lucky living on Barry Island so have a lot of open space, usually do 45 minute loop each day and can easily stay a very healthy distance away from anyone. I do feel for those who only have the streets to walk on as its its obviously a lot more difficult to avoid people.

The trouble is Annis, some people are hanging on to the little positives to date,I'm out doing deliveries 3 days a week, and if I'm truthful, barely a policeman/woman to be seen,so these people hanging around in parks, sunbathing or playing football are not being challenged often enough, surely they could do regular checks on the parks? And as I mentioned on another thread, I have seen both NHS staff and police breaking the social distancing rule whilst in queues for shops! ! There are always the one's who will push the boundaries no matter what so called rules are in place,I have been for walks (excersise ) over the woods, and hardly see a soul, the majority of morons I see on my rounds, are the youth, who are ferel n places, and know no boudaries, and no offence to any race in particular, but the foreign contingent seem to be the ones who don't respect the social distancing rule,I've come across many in the last 2 weeks or so who flatly flout it! And a lot with gloves and masks on too,who seem to think that gives them the right to do as they please, and please,no calling me racist,as that's not the case,as we also have fools who believe it doesn't include them either!! With the police here being as lax as they are,it's happening more and more,my wife hasn't been to the shops until yesterday, and the experience she encountered, means she won't be doing it again!! Are some people really that ignorant,or is it cabin fever with some?? :sad7: :old: :bluebird:

It is easy to jump to conclusions by taking a snapshot. Many of the people you witness could be journeying to the shops I bet there is some hero somewhere pointing the finger at your wife for venturing out to do shopping.

If you listen to the daily Government briefings it is clear that the numbers using the roads/public transport etc. have plummeted over the past 4 weeks. This has transpired into a slowing in the rate of infection and thankfully death.

It is better to look at the bigger picture and gauge the trend rather than believe there is mass non-compliance based on a few isolated incidents. There will always be the odd selfish idiot but 99% of UK citizens are complying with Government guidelines.

I think the problem is that you appear to be singling out the UK as a population that isn't following the guidelines, whereas we all know that it happens in all societies.

Currently there have been more prosecutions in Spain for breaching the lockdown than the UK (see links below). Unfortunately there are idiots in all countries, luckily they are a tiny minority in almost all (except the US   ).

As many have said on here, Cardiff in particular does seem to be complying with the city absolutely dead in terms of traffic. But even here police have had to be on their toes to clear groups from places like Roath Rec, etc. I know colleagues were saying that they were worried about Newport last week as the traffic around the town seemed to be quite busy but I don't know if that has improved this week.

It just demonstrates you can't base your assessment of how the lockdown is working on the levels of compliance where you live.

Well the the Majority of the UK are very law abiding citizens.
But the minority really do stand out and spoil it.

In 38 days I have not seen from where I live an under 18 yr old in the streets or families walking about or congregating or being chased by police .

I honestly believe in Spain and Italy there is more Respect for people and their elders.

When the lockdown came in force by the Spanish Govt, guess who were still acting like idiots?

Middle aged men & women in Benidorm live on tv with trollies of alcohol singing and congregating anywhere they could even though a pure lockdown was on and they were continuously told to go back to their hotels , but still acted like idiots and yes they weee my fellow British people it was embarrassing over here in tv live in Spanish and English channels .

You must of seen it?

Cardiff City Centre is perfect as it’s 98% closed down :thumbright: :thumbright:

It might be illegal in Spain this lockdown but we are still abiding by it as it’s helping to save life’s :thumbright: :thumbright:

No problem with any of your comments. But I would point out that I put think link up about the Spanish lockdown not for the legality point but for the fact it contains the number of Spanish people who have been prosecuted for breaching the lockdown, which is higher than the prosecutions for the same thing in UK.

But don’t you think this is because the Spanish authorities quite rightly have come down a lot sterner on people ignoring the lockdown rules

At this stage it's a little unclear as to whether Spain has come down sterner than UK. 1962 prosecutions in Spain against the UK's 1084 over a shorter period.

More prosecutions proportionately as the lockdown goes on and people decide they've had enough.
