Former chairman says he didn’t want midfielder to join Celtic

Joe Ledley joined Celtic in the summer of 2010 after leaving Cardiff City.

Steve Borley has stated on Twitter that he tried his best to convince Joe Ledley not to leave Cardiff City for Celtic.

Ledley started his professional club football career at Cardiff and played for the Welsh club until 2010.

The Wales international midfielder played over 200 league games for the Bluebirds and left the club on a free transfer in the summer of 2010 and moved to Celtic.

As reported, there was an issue regarding a new contract between Ledley and the club.

Former Cardiff chairman Borley has stated on Twitter that he tried to persuade Ledley to stay, and has outlined why the midfielder ended up at Celtic.

Ledley - who is now at Newcastle Jets in the A-League - has responded to Borley’s tweet.

Successful Celtic spell

Ledley was on the books of Celtic from 2010 until 2014 before moving to Crystal Palace.

The 33-year-old, who also played for Derby County and Charlton Athletic, won the Scottish Premiership thrice and the Scottish Cup once with Celtic.

I also personally spoke to Peter Ridsdale and he stated at the time, they begged Joe Ledley to stay it was entirely Ledleys decision to leave CCFC.

am I correct in thinking he signed a pre contract in the January and didn't even wait until his contract with us was up. { obviously he played the season out }

That’s what I was told, not sure if true ? But sadly I do know nothing was going to stop Ledley leaving us no matter what .

I don't think he did because his agent was touting him around with PL clubs including Stoke and West Brom. I also believe they met an italian club before settling on Celtic. I believe Joe when he says he would have stayed with Cardiff if we had beaten Blackpool.

The £££ in the premier league may well have twisted his arm mate.

Annis, this is what I believe and other stories/rumours away from football tended to support Joe's 'want' to leave. We all look for someone to blame when we go against the grain and Joe and his agent were no different

As I've said elsewhere, the guy was motivated by money and I don't blame him; I just with he'd been more up front and kept his (perceived) integrity intact. The saga of his (widely expected) departure 'on a free' dragged on far too long for it to have been anything but planned IMHO

Didn't Ledley have the same agent as Jay.They both left for f**k all.
They looked after themselves.
We were in dire straits at the time.
That's the Bosman ruling for you.

Yes Sky Andrews if I’m not mistaken.

Take as you find, he's a decent bloke Borely and a rare owner that loves the club and is a proper fan!

Ramsey was the one that upset me imagine another season here and then selling him for twice as much to ManU, he would have become a true World-class player then!

God I remember that.
The Riddler said that he had to accept Arsenals offer as it was cash up front and the club needed to pay bills urgently....so he said. :happy1:

we were lucky to have him to sell...the club were losing money hand over fist and that money was probably just enough to keep us afloat long enough for the Malaysians to step in...

It was all over the news the season before we turned down a few million for him rumours of 5 and 6 million from Tony Pullis and his club at the time Stock so I don't understand he went when his contract was up so we got nothing.

It was clear Ledley was going to go when he went I was just angry we didn't get money for him but then the money would have gone in Rids wallet not to the club anyway
