Captain Tom Moore's charity single debuts at NUMBER ONE as the 99-year-old veteran's fundraising for the NHS surpasses £26million
By JACK NEWMAN
Monday 20th April 2020
Captain Tom Moore's extraordinary fundraising efforts have continued as the 99-year-old has landed a number 1 on the Official Big Top 40 chart.
The Yorkshire veteran, who walked 100 laps of his garden to raise money for the NHS, released a cover of You'll Never Walk Alone with Michael Ball and the NHS Voices of Care Choir.
And it was announced tonight on the UK's biggest chart show on Capital and Heart that the new single has gone straight to the top of the charts.
Now over £25mill
I really hope Captain Tom is knighted ASAP

The amount of idiots over the years that have been Knighted or made a Lord, has been scandalous by both Conservatives & Labour.
So let’s here Sir Tom, for someone who really deserves it

Agreed mate.
IMO, he should already be a Sir, as anyone who fought in either of the World Wars will always be Sir to me.

Captain Tom to get Spitfire flypast on 100th birthday, provided Department for Transport agrees
A Spitfire flypast is being planned for the 100th birthday of Captain Tom Moore, the Second World War veteran who has raised more than £21 million for the NHS by walking 100 laps of his garden.
The former tank commander, dubbed a "one-man fundraising machine" by the Duke of Cambridge, completed his mission on Thursday and said it was "an absolutely fantastic sum of money".
A team of aircraft restorers now hope to fly a tribute in a Second World War-era Spitfire to mark Mr Moore’s 100th birthday on April 30.

What a gracious gent!
I notice from his medals that the good Captain sports his Burma Star with pride following his service in the Indian subcontinent during WW2. Whilst warfare against the Japanese was awful, it has been said that even more died due to the monsoons and malaria.
My father, too, served in the same region at that time and I know a little of the horrendous events that took place. Back then there was no support for the mental torment suffered during combat; they just had to get on with it. It was a gruesome war. And to cap it all, whilst Europe was celebrating VE Day the war was still going on in the Far East. Tom was one of the Forgotten Army. He will not be forgotten now.
He and his generation, can teach today's snowflakes much.
Well done, sir.
StT.

Yes, by all means get him knighted, but this gentleman's efforts sums up what wrong with this uk. The NHS is not a charity and never should be considered as one. The NHS should be funded properly by the government of the day and Labour are guilty of underfunding too.
Hopefully when this is over politicians will realise that the NHS is one of our most valuable assets and you simply cannot spent too much on it. But, unfortunately I won't hold my breath!

Looks like he may well be number one in the charts too for his birthday, a duet with Michael Ball.

I am not sure what it has to do with labour as the Tories have been in power for a decade but absolutely agree the NHS has been considerably under funded during their period of power. Hopefully the legacy of this man will be more than just the millions he has raised but also a proper change in attitude towards public services that have been so badly devalued during years of austerity. The UK is on track to be the worst affected country in Europe and when this is done, funding, policy and the government's slow action will all be contributing factors.

Totally agree with you. The point I was making was that NHS funding did fall under the Blair government but of course nothing to compare with what has happened during Tory rule. This picture sums it up

I know what he does for a living mate. As for politicians as comedians, we have the whole ‘Carry On’ team running Westminster at the moment.

Some people think there’s a huge pile of cash sitting somewhere, and the Govt are cutting funding on purpose.
We’re in massive debt still.. basically we’re broke. And health insurance is mandatory in Germany. It’s ok chipping in with complaints all the time mate, but it doesn’t achieve anything. Show some of your ideas.
What are your proposals?
I’d better not hold my breath either..

It's a bit like closing the stable door after the hosre has bolted really isn't it? The shutdown in the UK was too late. I'm sure you remember Boris 'advising' us this and that while other countries were shutting down. That delay has cost lives, the government literally have blood on their hands. Just look at Ireland who shut pubs when Boris was 'advising' us avoid them, New Zealand, Finland, Denmark, Sweden etc. The government allowed Cheltenham to go ahead of course the Tories has invested interest there. (Does the proximity of Cheltenham have any baring on the number of cases in Gwent?)
Germany has taken a different route by testing and tracing. This was the route planned by the Welsh Government who had ordered 5000 test a day from Roche, a number that would have been a godsend for us until the test were hijacked by Westminster who by then were starting to realise their mistake.
PPE of course is a scandal, but it's nothing new is it? Didn't they send troop to Iraq without the proper equipment?
As it is the UK is heading for the most deaths in Europe (see graph). We're talking about people who have been taken before their time, families broken forever all because of the first Tory policy of Herd Immunity. 'Save the economy and if a few pensioners die.' 'Take it on the chin' as I said blood on their hands
We pay National Insurance here too and I'm sure that everyone would be willing to pay more to help ensure proper funding for the NHS. Austerity was not needed and has been proved and has lead to this crisis in the NHS.

Captain Tom guest at hospital opening after raising £25m
A 99-year-old war veteran who has raised more than £25m for the National Health Service is to be guest of honour at the opening of a new UK field hospital.
Captain Tom Moore originally aimed to raise £1,000 for NHS Charities Together by completing 100 laps of his Bedfordshire garden before his 100th birthday.
The veteran will appear via video link at the opening of the Nightingale hospital in Harrogate on Tuesday
He said it was an honour and a chance to thank NHS workers directly.

He’s is an amazing man doing an amazing thing. I cannot believe he got to 25 mil fantastic. I pledged at work when it was on 7 million that I would donate a £100 every time he broke another million mark. Doh. In all honesty the best money I’ve spent for a long time I hope I have to spend a load more.

And the soundbites keep coming.. but I do agree with you on the German model of mandatory health insurance. If we want a better NHS, we all need to pay more.
