What's wrong with living in your 2nd home?

Thu Apr 16, 2020 12:57 pm

If you own it, moved in before lockdown, pay tax on it, and it's got a better garden and there are less chances of catching Corona, why can't you lockdown in Cornwall?

The locals sound a bit selfish and hypocritical to me, they welcome tourists when it suits them, now there's a problem they are basically saying feck off it's our area, we don't want non-locals here?

I can understand Caravans tents and non-permanent buildings, but if a 2nd homeowner didn't own it, someone else would be living there anyway?

I agree, all local services will be based on council tax payers. 2nd home owners actually pay a significant uplift on council tax so that can't be an argument.

It's different for caravan owners or people renting holiday homes as they are an increase on the local population, but for 2nd home owners I can't see any real argument other than the restriction on unnecessary travel which in these initial stages I do understand. But if you're already there what's the problem ?

I agree with the locals. GR may have moved his family to Cornwall before the official lock down but by the day he moved into his 'second home' (20th March) we all knew what was coming down the line and I have no doubt his motive was to avoid the outbreak in London which was under way by then.

It is GR who is acting selfishly his 'main' home is not Cornwall and he should-not be residing there. There are many people who have second homes in Cornwall but have not taken advantage of them and stayed in their main homes, why does GR consider himself a special exemption?

Just think if the circumstances were different it was announced that South Wales was a COVID-19 free area and people from London started debunking to live in Cardiff and Newport wouldn't you be angry that they were bringing the virus with them and could potentially put extra strain on hospitals, chemists, food supply and other essential services?

No I disagree, if someone owns a home next to me and only uses it occasionally that's up to them, but they would be free to use it whenever they like it's their home?

He hasn't taken Corona to Cornwall has he he moved his family to his other home, where it's probably nicer to spend time isolated.

If there is no virus there how is it putting a strain on the hospitals, if GR wasn't living there someone else would be, but that would be ok because they call it a first house?

They would still need a hospital if they are ill?

They'll be back asking for selfies with him when it's all over and using him for publicity shots to promote Cornwall I expect, and putting all the prices up as we will all want a holiday, it won't be feck off then

If the law of the land doesnt forbid second property ownership its very difficult to form an argument a second property owner can't take up residence when they chose.

I'm sure plenty of rural dwellers resent second property ownership but by the same token welcome the extra value their own property accrues whilst local businesses welcome the extra spend.

I'm sure GR not the only one, just the one in this spotlight just now.

I see their point, but that's life the World changes as do your neighbours, I think that the main problem is the locals don't like outsiders taking their properties, but as you said they like the house values going up and the money the holidaymakers spend!
