Looks like Belgium and Germany have stopped all football until September

Germany were planning on going back soon

But Schools and some shops will open in May.

Annis, What I can’t understand is that if schools and some shops are going to be open, why is it frowned upon for football to be played behind closed doors?
I understand that first aiders etc would need to be present but I can’t see that this would be more of a risk than any of the other things that they are proposing.

Even if shops open, social distancing rules will still apply.

23 people on a football field will not be distancing. Its not safe.

That number ignores substitutes, TV, press and medical staff as well as coaches and other club officials. All games would need to be played by June 30th before player contracts expire and they can walk away. Its not going to happen.

Germany has said no mass gatherings until August, they have said nothing about football behind closed doors, but i would be surprised if 20+ was not considered a gathering!

The other thing they are most worried about is that even if the matches are played behind closed doors fans will still turn up in their thousands milling around outside the stadium.

They’d be crazy to do that.
I’d be more than happy to watch games on the box.

No vaccine no mass gatherings all those asking about this season are living in cloud cuckoo land.It is very likely that next season will be postponed, so September 2021 seems a more realistic assessment by then we should have a vaccine.

What is a mass gathering though ? 2,10,50,100,500, 1000,5000. Indoor or outdoor. Masks or no masks.

If its relaxed to 100 then no problem behind closed doors

I believe there are too many imponderables to complete this season. Cancel it, work out how they are going to divi up the money and start the new season in October with no cups and 2 games a week.

Not sure when the update came from regarding no football in Germany, the clubs belive they will start fixtures in May but behind closed doors. The mass gathering ban to September was in respect to crowds not the games.

Even the tour de France has been confirmed for August.

Some of posts saying no football even next season, is taking things to extreams. Even Italy are planning to restart in May behind closed doors.

yes I think the mass gathering and football were assumed to be one and same thing..
but how many people involved in a behind closed doors game is another question...

Even a behind closed doors game would require 36 players, 4 match officials, 2 managers, several coaching staff, medical staff, that's without including TV technicians and cameramen, commentators etc. Not going to happen.

If all concerned are given the 'all clear' before they are allowed to partake in any capacity (players, officials, coaches, medics, etc.) then why should it be an issue? :thumbright:

Re: Football: “ Common Sense “

Exactly, test those involved beforehand and away we go. I think the media has got to a few people in how they are thinking about this.

On the face of it testing makes sense, but surely it is only relevant in that moment? For example, we could play Derby on a Sunday, with everyone being tested and given the all clear and the next fixture on the Wednesday.

48 hours later one of Derby players shows symptoms and is positive - what happens? Does the whole Derby team have to go into isolation, throwing following fixtures into doubt. Do we have to do the same, as our players would have been in close contact on the pitch?

So assume it is a continuous testing process, but with a limited amount of tests available, is it right that these go to footballers v independent shop keepers, business owners etc? Even if clubs pay for them themselves, they take limited capacity away from areas of the economy that might be deemed higher priority.

yes, but whats the difference between this and you and a big gang of mates having private tests and then having a party .?

.... Because the players and officials are working? You have a party with your mates... Is well just having a party

Nothing, I guess and I'm sure there are those who have the means to obtain/pay for such things (such is life) but I think there is a chasm of difference between the two examples

It's (apparently not) just my personal opinion but I cannot see why the PL/EFL wouldn't want to finish THIS season before entertaining another...

Unlike many other Leagues, there is far too much at stake financially not for that to happen and the repercussions could be immense; specifically if teams like West Brom/Leeds (as currently positioned examples) are denied the opportunity of promotion whilst others (Bournemouth, Villa, Norwich as currently positioned examples) are reprieved and take another £100m as an effective 'freebie'

There is no guarantee (indeed it is unlikely) that the same teams will be promoted/relegated next season, so it is (IMHO) imperative that this season is concluded

Of course, the negatives on this Forum will always bring in the "it's not more important than saving lives" line and that, of course, is the priority. However, the country isn't going to be in 'lockdown' for ever, so it's important that life and events start to carry on as normal as soon is as practicable. Football, in its own context as an influential sport, should and will play a big part in that and the integrity of the competition will be protected by the completion of the campaign in progress
