“ ARSENAL PLAYERS REFUSE TO TAKE 12% PAY CUTS “

Tue Apr 14, 2020 4:34 pm

Arsenal’s first-team squad have rejected the chance to take a £25million pay cut over the next 12 months, with a number of first team players unhappy.

The 12.5% pay cut was proposed by the club’s hierarchy in order to lessen the economic effects caused by the deadly coronavirus pandemic which has afflicted the entire world

Tuesday 14th April 2020

More than 115,000 people have died across the globe, with the UK set to become the most badly hit country in Europe

Manager Mikel Arteta tested positive for COVID-19 last month and the Premier League was duly suspended indefinitely – with no games played after March 9.

While Arteta has thankfully recovered, the financial implications of the virus have hit the north London side hard and they have not collected a single gate receipt since March 7 when they were fortunate to take all three points against London rivals West Ham United.

The club had hoped to get their players to agree to a drop in their salaries between April 2020 and March 2021.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has thankfully recovered after contracting COVID-19

However, The Telegraph claim the squad voted on the matter on Monday afternoon and have rejected this proposal.

The proposal included an incentive which meant any player who agreed to the cut and then signed a new deal in the fate would receive the educated balance back as well as their new salary.

Another incentive was that any player sold after the virus has subsided would receive their wage cut back in full.

But the report by the Telegraph suggests the players do no anticipate much movement in the transfer market this summer given the financial implications of the virus, with the club’s top earners refusing to budge.

If they’re the only team not doing it the repercussions amongst opposing (as well as their own) will go on for years.

Most of these players really are disgusting . Makes me not want to watch them again.
They cant even help there own colleagues at the Emirates who are
taking forces pay cuts just to be able to feed there children .

Time for the fans to teach them a lesson by refusing to buy tickets and sky. That will force them to drop wages

If it’s true (and we don’t know all the facts yet) they are playing a very dangerous game which could horrifically backfire on them!!!!

Any other worker, in any other industry, who cannot carry out their normal work are being furlonged with a maximum wage of £2500 per month paid to them by the government.

Why does this not happen with football players.

I have a big issue with people slating footballers at the moment.

Should they take a pay cut during this period? 100%.

But there are people who earn just as much money as top football players that aren't taking pay cuts, aren't working as normal but are not getting the same scrutiny in the public eye over this issue.

Footballers are an easy target.

I think if your being paid full wages your extremely lucky. but don't see that its anything to do with anybody other than employer and employee...and there are hundreds of thousands in this position not just footballers..

Fans will flock back to those club's up down the land like zombies going to the supermarket. Short memories we all have I'm afraid. After this I hope football collapses in its current greedy form.

Football is in an asset bubble that may burst through this, so if i was an professional footballer at Arsenal I wouldn't want to take a cut or even a deferral. Wheres the money going ? Its not to the local community hospital or NHS directly and they and their family will have private health care most of us could dream of.

They are glorified contractors, on a good deal, the next one may (probably will) be significantly less. The guys who own Arsenal are billionaires, they could stump up the couple of million extra a month if the club needs it or they could sell an asset. I certainly wouldn't be taking a 12 month contract reduction so you can buy Pogba or a similar high profile big contract name.

This crisis has shown what is important and those at the bottom of the income hierarchy are those we most need in a crisis. The obscene money entertainers (thats what the top guys are) and general top earners will need to be seriously need to be looked at by the government in forms of taxation after this, but thats another argument that drifts into this one.

I am glad to see the Swiss citizen Lewis Hamilton telling us how much he cares about the NHS from his tax haven.

Very true mate but footballers are idolised like no other group on earth. They all should do the decent thing and do whatever they can to help, they’re unable to work so they should be furloughed, why should a stadium cleaner be furloughed but a stadium footballer isn’t.

Agree 100%.
Furlough all of them. Contracts or not as everyone working has some form of contract.
Greedy bastards. Teach them a lesson.

Bottom line is, they are so rich they hold the power. Its how they choose to apply that is defining, and you'd hope they realise why they've been asked. The media issue is only how much effect you let it have.

A stadium cleaner would just be sacked if they refused. The clubs have only got themselves to blame.

To my knowledge Arsenal have not furloughed any of their staff and continue to pay their staff at 100%. I was shocked how many employees these clubs have, but i doubt all their annual salaries match 12% of the playing and management of the club annual salaries. So why 12%

because a cleaner doesn't have a legally air tight contract, or is he worth anything in the transfer market...
asking players to take a cut yes.. furloughing is basically giving out free transfers { dai the cleaner does not HAVE to return to the club } .. . although im not sure id be thrilled to take a cut knowing the same club are likely to use the saved money to buy a better player than me...so I am therefore subsidising my replacement. ?

it simply shows the disconnection between some players and the fans of their clubs.
If you can’t take a pay down to say £30k a week when you can’t spend much then it’s simply down to greed ....And then the supporters who have lost jobs and wages will have every right to give em stick.
I don’t normally go for booing my teams players but this is totally different ....I have no choice but to take what I’m given and expected to live on it till my business get going again....footballers are not an exception and have made themselves easy targets .
Just hope they don’t get their contracts renewed cos I can’t see hem being welcomed at too many clubs if they don’t take a pay cut now
