More than 1,000 fines issued by police
Martin Hewitt says police are “in a strong position” to enforce social-distancing rules, urging people to “keep reporting crime to us”.
Data from 37 forces shows that 1,087 fines were issued for breaches of the rules up to 8 April, he says.
“This shows the overwhelming majority of people are staying at home to save lives."
He says police will publish “enforcement data every fortnight as we move through the crisis”.

Police 'unafraid to act' if public break rules
Moving onto police powers, the home secretary thanks the police for working "tirelessly to keep us safe" during the lockdown.
Addressing the public, she says: "If you don't play your part, our selfless police, who are out there risking their lives to save others, will be unafraid to act."
Her words come amid concerns some police are overstepping lockdown powers.
She hands over to Martin Hewitt, chairman of the National Police Chiefs' Council (NPCC).
“This feels a very different Easter weekend for all of us," he says. "It feels different for police officers too."
He says police are "taking new risks" as they seek to enforce the rules.

Lock them up where? Because I'm sure the prisons will be happy not to have them! If they are carrying the virus,it could spread throughout the prison in no time, and not everyone in jail is deserving of that.In real time,,my nephew has been fined, whilst going to work,on queen Street! And £80 at that ffs! It's not as if he was alone either, there were others in front of him, that were allowed to get away with it! In these difficult times,he's been fined a third of his weekly wage! As a key worker,a little telling off would have sufficed surely? But fined more than a person being out for no reason,is absurd!! The number of times I have been brushed by a cyclist on queen Street, whilst it being really busy,or had to jump out of the way of one,not once has a copper pulled one over for cycling in a pedestrian only space, and there have been times when police were present, and turned a blind eye! It makes my blood boil, that he was pulled in these circumstances, it's not as if queen Street is busy,it's f@cking deserted.

Joel Martinique Hall appeared before magistrates in Mold after the assault in Pwllheli, North Wales. The 24-year-old was arrested on Tuesday and was jailed for six months after being charged with 11 offences. North Wales Police county chief inspector for Gwynedd Mark Armstrong said: “Assaulting Emergency Service workers at anytime is simply not acceptable, as is the disorderly behaviour that this female was responsible for in Pwllheli this past Tuesday afternoon.he fact that she has been charged and sentenced on first appearance for 11 separate offences, to six months immediate imprisonment, shows how serious the court has taken these offences against both the community and also the emergency service workers involved.
"They were simply doing their jobs within the communities they serve.”
Her imprisonment comes after a man was jailed for 12 months for coughing in the face of two nurses in a Staffordshire hospital.
Lance King was taken to Royal Stoke University Hospital with suspected Covid-19 and coughed on two A&E nurses on April 6.
Staffordshire Police said the 30-year-old also urinated on the floor and scribbled on himself and his cubicle with a pen from the nurse’s desk.
As Easter approaches, the police have seen a spike in the amount of Britons avoiding social-distancing rules.
