PFA chief issues stark financial warning to Cardiff City, Swansea City and other Championship clubs

Some clubs face severe financial troubles because of the stoppage of the season

FRIDAY 10 APR 2020

Gordon Taylor has issued a financial warning to Championship clubs

Professional Footballers’ Association [PFA] chief executive Gordon Taylor has warned there is an existential threat to some clubs as a result of the coronavirus crisis.

Football right across England, as well as most of Europe, has been forced to come to a halt in recent weeks because of the severity of the pandemic, with match action not expected to resume any time soon.

As a result of that, clubs, particularly at the lower end of the English football pyramid, are poised to suffer in a financial sense with lost revenue from match-day income.

Now, Taylor has suggested that clubs, including Cardiff City and Swansea City, have got to have tighter control over their income and expenditure during the crisis.

Speaking to beIN Sport’s Keys and Gray show, Taylor explained: “You can't guarantee anything in such a climate like this, in a world where every country is suffering and dealing with a virus they've never known before.

"When you get a situation like this then the whole game can blow up like a balloon being pricked. We do have a record number of full-time clubs, it is becoming more difficult - in spite of the fact that, before this epidemic, clubs have never had more money - it's about management of money.

"There's got to be a tighter control of income and expenditure and the management of clubs, otherwise we are painting a false picture.

"All I can say is that players will play their part in achieving this objective (of keeping clubs afloat), I can assure you of that.

"We want players to be around the table with their clubs, with their managers, with their chief execs, with their directors of finance, and to be fully in the picture and to agree between them - rather than be dictated to.

"It's not as though football is a job for life, and if we can save their income, then we will do. But if the situation does become worse, then they will agree that they are part of a solution to overcome that."

Taylor has also reiterated the importance of the 2019/20 season being brought to a conclusion.

"This is the 19-20 season, we have the rest of 2020 to deliver the season," he added.

"These are special and unique times. We've managed to get football through two world wars...having survived that, the least we can do is to hang on to the idea that we can get through this season."

The only way to save football clubs is to bring in a wage cap. Over the next 10/15 years we will see the demise of a lot of big clubs as the current levels are totally unsustainable. Fans have had enough of the ridiculous prices already.

Gordon Taylor the guy who positively encouraged massive pay rises for the players for the last twenty years picking up a nice £500k p.a salary for doing sweet fa... now warns of a major financial crisis looming???

The guy is a complete knobend and a disgrace to football.. needs to f**k off ASAP and let someone with an ounce of realism takeover.

Sums up everything that is wrong in modern football

Gordon Taylor earns considerably more than 500k. Worse than any agent. Should have no voice whatsoever.

Taylor is just a puppet for those that are making the real money out of footbal i.e the likes of Sky Sports and other International medias.

This sort of thing only ripples back to him when it starts hitting the mideas such as the likes of Sky Sports. This is looking like all the top sports are going to be cancelled this year and that will have a big impact on them. Subscriptions will drop like a stone from a high flying helicopter The source of their entertainment such as football clubs will struggle and possible go out of business. The big clubs who will most likely survive this will not have the smaller clubs to provide them the opposition where they make most of their money. Eventually the bigger clubs will go out of business due to the indirect reliance they have on the smaller clubs. They have known this all along and now realise its time to force the issue. This is why Taylor is speaking out and its not becuase he kows its best but because he is having his strings pulled by the medias who control him.
