Your first away game

Thu Apr 09, 2020 11:25 pm

Mine was the year be beat Palace at theirs in the old 3rd division late on in the season. What a laugh but the result so helped with a 1 nil win from a Alston header from a corner. Malcolm Alison was their manager at the time who was knocking off a topless model named fiona Richmond. You can imagine the songs but the highlight. Of the day as reported in the press on Sunday was that 6000 sang the Welsh anthem at the end. And they did something quite special. You may laugh at this but we had 35000 on the Wednesday for the visit of table topping Hereford (yes Hereford) and won and both went up to the promised land of div 2

35,000 ? You're having a laugh if you think there was anywhere near that number on that night. Those were the days of 2 for the club & 1 for me at the turnstiles.

My first away was either at Hereford or Luton around that time, can't remember which one though. :old: :old:

You might want to try rereading what I wrote, 35,000 was the official figure & I'm saying there were way more than that squeezed in, I could hardly breathe at times.

Swansea away 1980...the New Years Day game. Ever since, I have hated David Giles, even tho I know he’s a decent bloke. We had fans behind both goals.. in that crappy little end they had there. It was the first game of the rivalry really, as they were on the up and had a decent side.

So if 35,000 was the official crowd, you’re saying there was more than that in there due to the ‘one for you one for me’ activities at the turnstiles.

My first was 78/79 Wrexham away special train.
A memorable one was Hereford welsh cup 82. Ended up in their magistrates court.

That game(Hereford) was nuts.. I’ve never seen so much fighting at a football match.. it just went on and on between us and the police.

Yes it was packed, even missed kick off.

My first away was Newport County in the Welsh Cup in 82. Lost 1-0. My next away was the same venue, the same season. Easter Monday 83, lost 1-0 again in front of 16000. We had the last laugh though, we went up, Cewnty just missed out!

Tosh scored with his head (think it finished 1-0) :notworthy:

Yes, it did come across like that (less not more) and I was there, too; ironically, my first as a season ticket holder

Hereford were our promotion rivals that season and we beat them 2-0 with second half goals from Doug Livermore and Alan Campbell (one of my all-time favourites), although they beat us to the title in the end!

The season started slowly with a (now legendary) lethargic fan base seeing crowds hover between 5,000 and 9,000 for most of the season. However, with the final home game of the season ironically being against our 'top of the table' rivals, the Ninian Park crowd suddenly exploded, as people wanted a piece of the first relative 'success' since the Toshack era

Looking back, that was a great Cardiff City team (regardless of the Divisions we were in) and they could play!

Days that helped shape a love and excitement for the club that still exists today :thumbright: :ayatollah:

WOw looking at that squad list the thing that stands out more than anything for me is that apart from Adrian Alston all players were BRITISH

My God how things have changed in such a short time :bluescarf:

I don't look at things that way but it seems you are right...and I guess Alston was 'acceptable' as he was from a Commonwealth country ;)

City always seemed to have a lot of Scotsmen in their teams back in the day, too...

Alan Campbell, Freddie Pethard (ignore the Welsh symbol below, as he was from Glasgow and played for Celtic first) and the legendary John Buchanan were Scots in that particular squad

How we could do with an Adrian Alston and a Tony Evans right now...! :notworthy: :ayatollah:

1989 Aldershot 0 v 1 Cardiff. Alan Curtis winner. Biggest memory was the Aldershot banter with Steve Tupling warming up as a sub. 'Where did you get your perm done darling?!'

Fulham in the 70s amazed they sold drink in the ground. Best scored and Rodney Marsh played.

Newport away. Horrible armpit of a ground. I remember some city taking a few small pieces of the (corrugated?) roof. We lost 1-0 but a draw would probably have been a fairer result. :old: :old: :old:

Re: Your first away game

April 1972. My father and two of his friends (sadly all since passed on) Brian Clark scored but we lost 3-1. The 2 things I remember are that it peed down and we had an open end and it was the first time I got to touch the ball and throw it back. I obviously got the bug because years later I managed a 10 year stint without missing a game home or away. I've never lost the addiction but sadly have it under control these day. Still got a season ticket and manage about 7/8 aways a season. Good to read all of the above though because I think I was all but the Watford one in 1970

First away was Bristol City 1969 when still in school, was like the Wild West on the Football Special no lights windows all broken. Then the old bill kept a distance as we trekked through Bristol to Ashton Gate it was pretty scary stuff for a school kid.

Absolutely right, a few years earlier we had over 55,000 against Arsenal. and I swear the Hereford crowd was just as big.

Sheffield Utd away 1978 I think? Pitch invasions, and a 1-0 away win, the only one of that season. Hooked for life.

Oxford United v Cardiff City 2/10/82
Manor Ground Oxford.
Jimmy Mullen equalizer one minute from time.
Only about 6,000 there, but a great atmosphere. We came away feeling like it was a victory.
