I am not a believer in total lockdown but I am very much a believer in the police being given whatever powers they need to stop the absolute knobheads who are flouting the current restrictions.

These idiots need to be hit hard.

Police will get more powers 'if needed', says FM

Police forces in Wales insist they have the powers to deal with people ignoring guidelines to stay at home, the first minister says.

Mark Drakeford said chief constables in Wales told him they can deal with those taking unnecessary journeys, such as travelling to second homes.

However he added that if police ask for greater measures during the coronavirus pandemic, "they will get those powers".

"If they think that the penalties are not sufficient we will look at the penalties as well," he said.

Plaid Cymru leader Adam Price has called for £1,000 fines for those repeatedly ignoring the ban on non-essential travel as a "real deterrent".

Police in Wales have the same powers of arrest as counterparts in England but the fining guidelines differ and are much lower in Wales.

Police in England can issue fines of up to £960 for repeat offences.

Police commissioner says fines 'aren't enough of a deterrent'

Police forces in Wales need to be able to give out greater fines to people ignoring the stay-at-home rules, according to the Police and Crime Commissioner for Dyfed-Powys.

Dafydd Llywelyn told Radio Cymru's Post Cyntaf programme that the current fines "aren't enough of a deterrent".

On Friday, First Minister Mark Drakeford said police forces in Wales were satisfied they had the powers to deal with people flouting the measures introduced to curb the spread of coronavirus.

Mr Drakeford added that should the police request greater powers as the pandemic continues, “they will get those powers”.

"If they think that the penalties are not sufficient we will look at the penalties as well," he added.

Currently, people found to be breaching the lockdown rules are fined £60 for a first offence.

That's reduced to £30 if the penalty is paid within 14 days.

More than 1,000 fines issued by police

Martin Hewitt says police are “in a strong position” to enforce social-distancing rules, urging people to “keep reporting crime to us”.

Data from 37 forces shows that 1,087 fines were issued for breaches of the rules up to 8 April, he says.

“This shows the overwhelming majority of people are staying at home to save lives."

He says police will publish “enforcement data every fortnight as we move through the crisis”.
