My favourite footballer of all time. As a youngster I used to watch him on TV for Spurs before I even went down Ninian Park.

He is simply the finest goalscorer the Football League has seen (I know others have scored more, but all of his were in the top flight). He had pace and could beat anyone and pick his spot in the net.

And then he was a real character in Saint and Greavsie on TV.

I saw him play once at Ninian Park in the John Charles Testimonial game v Leeds United in 1971. He scored.

Also I saw him at Bridgend Town when he was player/coach at Barnet. I don't think he played, spent all game in the bar!

A true legend and I hope he gets over this setback.

I was at that John Charles testimony. It finished 7-6 to the all starts.
