Its partly a recording factor though. A lot of the weekends don't recorded until Monday so are in todays figure. On a slightly better note the new infections remained steady.

On a real downside my wife drove into work today in Newham. She goes one day a week at the moment. She lost count of the groups of youths hanging around. No different than it is in normal times. One group in the park at the end of the Barking at least 30 strong.

Analysis: Growth in new UK cases could be stalling

Robert Cuffe

BBC head of statistics

Today’s figures are a record high and bring the currently reported death toll above 6,000 for the first time.

Today's 786 is higher than Saturday’s previous peak of 708 deaths reported in a single day.

We also know that this figure misses deaths that occurred but have not yet been reported, so the true death toll at this point is likely higher.

If there is any silver lining to these grim figures, it is that they represent the fourth day in a row of below-trend growth.

For weeks up until Friday’s figures, the number of deaths had been doubling every three-and-a-half days.

Had that trend continued, we would have seen close to 1,400 deaths today.

So 786 is better than that – although it’s still too soon to know what’s causing it.

It could be a big bottleneck in reporting (we’ve seen that after previous weekends) or genuine evidence that growth is truly slowing down.

We reported earlier that 70 more people died in Scotland over the past day, in the highest daily rise there so far.

We'll get a full picture of the UK figures later from the Department of Health - it calculates them slightly differently so we will have to wait for the UK-wide figure.

Spain death toll passes 15,000, but new cases fall

The number of coronavirus deaths in Spain has risen to 15,238, but there is hope as the rate of new infections appears to be slowing.

According to latest data from the past 24 hours, Spain recorded 683 deaths – a drop from the 757 reported on Wednesday.

The figure represents a return to a daily decrease in new cases. New infections had been declining for four consecutive days until the numbers rose again on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Thursday's figures also showed a drop in the number of deaths.

Parliament is debating an extension to Spain's lockdown, but the prime minister has suggested the situation is beginning to be brought under control.

We have already seen the highest cases in Wales confirmed today -

Big jump in the number of cases

Another 502 cases of coronavirus in Wales have been confirmed, the biggest daily increase of the outbreak so far.

Public Health Wales said yesterday's total of 16 was untypically low because it only covered a six-hour period rather than 24 hours, as the authority changes the time period being covered in the daily announcement.

UK 'could be worst affected country in Europe'

The Andrew Marr Show

Wellcome Trust director Sir Jeremy Farrar says the UK is “likely to be one of the worst, if not the worst, affected countries in Europe”.

Sir Jeremy, a member of the UK government's Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage), said this was down to the lack of testing and tracing.

He also told the BBC's Andrew Marr a second or third wave of coronavirus was "probably inevitable" and a vaccine was the only way out,

A vaccine could be available by autumn, he added, but it would take months to ramp up manufacturing of it to get to "the scale required to vaccinate many millions of people".

"I would hope we can get done in 12 months," said Sir Jeremy.
