China reports increase in new coronavirus cases, asymptomatic patients

Mainland China reported 39 new coronavirus cases as of Sunday, up from 30 a day earlier, and the number of asymptomatic cases also surged, as Beijing continued to struggle to extinguish the outbreak despite drastic containment efforts.

The National Health Commission said in a statement on Monday that 78 new asymptomatic cases had been identified at of the end of the day on Sunday, compared with 47 the day before.

Imported cases and asymptomatic patients, who have the virus and can give it to others but show no symptoms, have become China's chief concern in recent weeks after draconian containment measures succeeded in slashing the infection rate.

Of the new cases showing symptoms, 38 were people who had entered China from abroad, compared with 25 a day earlier. One new locally transmitted infection was reported, in the southern province of Guangdong, down from five a day earlier in the same province.

The new locally transmitted case, in the city of Shenzhen, was a person who had travelled from Hubei province, the original epicentre of the outbreak, Guangdong provincial authorities said.

The Guangdong health commission raised the risk level for a total of four districts in the cities of Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Jieyang from low to medium late on Sunday.

Mainland China has now reported a total of 81,708 cases, with 3,331 deaths.

Daily infections have fallen dramatically from the peak of the epidemic in February, when hundreds were reported daily, but new infections continue to appear daily.

The country has closed off its borders to foreigners as the virus spreads globally, though most imported cases involve Chinese nationals returning from overseas.

The central government also has pushed local authorities to identify and isolate the asymptomatic patients.

Surely some consideration has to be given from preventing any inward travel from China or of Chinese people to the UK in the future?

The problem with china is that there medical practices and technology are very advanced so you could see them only having below 5000 deaths. On the other hand with the squalor in outer areas and sheer numbers of people you could also see them having 100,000 deaths.

I doubt we will ever know the truth
But I would expect it to be upwards of 20,000 if I had to guess and going on numbers elsewhere

The way it spread around the world how the f**k didnt it spread around china they are packed into there city's like rats ,you noticed how every Chinese takeaway is shut compared to other takeaways theyve been on the blower backhome and realise how deadly this virus is

China denies 'cover-up' and defends WHO

The Chinese government has rejected “unfair and unjust” allegations that it tried to “cover up” the coronavirus outbreak in the city where it began.

Zhao Lijian, a foreign ministry spokesman, said China had been “open, transparent and responsible” in informing the world about the epidemic.

He said it “took us some time before we knew more about” the virus, which was officially first detected in the city of Wuhan, in Hubei province, late last year.

China is widely considered to have concealed the extent, severity and even existence of Covid-19 during the early stages of the outbreakOn Wednesday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo accused China of not being transparent about the scale of the outbreak in Wuhan.

On Thursday Lijian hit back, suggesting the virus might not have originated in Wuhan and could have emerged “in any city, country or region in the world”.

He also defended the World Health Organization, after US President Donald Trump accused it of being "very China-centric".

A good month for dogs in China

Last week, the Chinese city of Shenzhen became the first to ban the sale and consumption of dog and cat meat.

And now China may reclassify dogs as pets rather than livestock, after the virus outbreak - which began in a market selling live animals - prompted the country to review its laws around the wildlife trade.

"With the progress of human civilisation... dogs have changed from traditional domestic animals to companion animals," said the country's agriculture authority in a proposed policy, according to a state media report.

"Dogs are generally not regarded as livestock... and China should also not manage them as [that]."

The draft policy is now open to the public for consultation.
