I've read a few topics regarding footballers being against taking a pay cut. Why are they not under the same conditions as laid out by the government? 80% of salary up to a maximum of £2,500 a month. Are they exempt?

They are not exempt. But try telling a player on £10,000 every 7 days that he is now on £2,000 every 31 days.

yes everyone is exempt unless they've been furloughed by their employers.. I presume footballers are expected to work from home keeping fit.

Football Association of Wales to furlough staff
The Football Association of Wales [FAW] is preparing to furlough some staff in the wake of the coronavirus crisis.
An FAW source said it was looking at the measures to "protect the future of football in the country".
The initiative will also see some employees of the FAW Trust, which is responsible for Wales' burgeoning reputation for coaching and player development, placed on furlough leave. The process is currently ongoing.

Wales' leading rugby players to take 25% pay cut
Wales' leading rugby players will take a 25% pay cut as the sport deals with the financial impact of coronavirus, it has emerged this evening.
The Professional Rugby Board (PRB), representing the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) and the four regions - Cardiff Blues, Dragons, Ospreys and Scarlets - reached the agreement with the Welsh Rugby Players' Association (WRPA).
The salary reduction, effective from 1 April, will last three months.
However, the cut will not apply to players earning £25,000 a year or less.

It isn't unreasonable for players not currently plying their trade to reduce their income during these odd times and if UEFA's plans are taken up, many will recoup any losses and more when the season resumes and they are still playing/getting bonuses
The preference would be to contribute via donations (to worthy causes) from their net income, rather than see a wage reduction that impacts on the tax system itself. That makes a lot of sense in my eyes
