Easy answer for the goverment don't pay the greedy sods,(and all other rich clubs that try it) and if they try and lay off their workers hit them where it hurts, in their pockets and put sanctions on them, I am sure that the government can come up with something

Spurs & Newcastle also wasting tax payers money

UK culture secretary wants 'urgent' agreement between football authorities

Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden has called for football authorities to reach an agreement on financial support during the coronavirus crisis "urgently", adding the public will take a "very dim view" of clubs furloughing low-paid workers.

Some Premier League clubs, including leaders Liverpool, are facing criticism for furloughing non-playing staff.

Players have been urged to do more by Health Secretary Matt Hancock and the Premier League proposed a 30% pay cut.

But the Professional Footballers Association says that may harm the NHS while former England captain Wayne Rooney has called the power struggle a "disgrace" and says players are being treated like "scapegoats".

Speaking to the Telegraph, Mr Dowden said "clubs, players and owners should be thinking very carefully about their next steps".

"Leaving the public purse to pick up the cost of furloughing low paid workers, whilst players earn millions and billionaire owners go untouched is something I know the public will rightly take a very dim view of," Mr Dowden said.

"At a time of national crisis, our national sport must play its part.

"I expect to see the football authorities judge the mood of the country and come together with an agreement urgently."

I have heard this morning journalists defending players for not taking pay cuts and even painting them as 'victims' and 'scapegoats'.

Football is burning its bridges and should face one hell of a backlash when this is all over

The thing is all football clubs are limited companies and many are facing cutting costs sooner rather than later to stay in business. Plenty of other limited companies have gone down this road but have escaped the wrath of this forum.Just because a company name ends with City or Utd or Rovers or whatever doesn't mean they shouldn't be allowed the same help in this crises. When it comes to players contracts though it is totally different.Trying to enforce a 30% reduction in a players contract would see most clubs sued out of existence.

Not saying its right but that's how I see it.

of course they are being made scapegoats. and by people who hadn't thought it through...there were about 4 threads on here of people outraged but not one saying why they should lose 30% other than they get paid too much or where the money would go...
cant find one other example of someone who is well paid , not furloughed that the pointers are attacking..
ironically it mostly posters who normally want the club to be more ambitious and spend more :?

If you estimate that liverpool pay all 500 employees an average of £1800 a month each. (Its not that high as they are not all full time)

That is around £900k a month in wages or £225k a week.

If all 30 of there players took a £7.5k a week wage cut for three months out of there huge wages which for some is less than 5%, then they could afford to keep every member of staff on full time.

Not really a lot to ask is it

And in honesty those figures are probably way to high aswell

Probably like the normal guy taking home £270 a week instead of £300
