The admission is said to be a precautionary rather than emergency measure. It is not known whether he will remain in hospital overnight.
The prime minister is still leading the government response to the COVID-19 outbreak, it is understood.
Mr Johnson has been self-isolating in 11 Downing Street since testing positive; he uses the residence above the chancellor's official office as several prime ministers have in the past given it has a larger living space.

More on UK PM's hospital tests
The Downing Street spokesperson goes on to say: "[Mr Johnson] thanks NHS staff for all of their incredible hard work and urges the public to continue to follow the Government's advice to stay at home, protect the NHS and save lives.”
The prime minister has had coronavirus for 10 days and continues to have persistent symptoms, including a high temperature.
For purely precautionary reasons, he has gone to hospital for tests.
It was considered sensible for doctors to see Mr Johnson in person given he has ongoing symptoms, the spokesperson says. He remains in charge of the UK government, and is in contact with ministerial colleagues and officials.
The news comes a day after Mr Johnson's pregnant fiancée Carrie Symonds announced that she had experienced coronavirus symptoms.

PM Johnson expected to stay overnight
Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to remain in hospital overnight for what has been described by Downing Street as "routine tests".
Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab is expected to chair the government's next coronavirus meeting.
Mr Johnson has worked from home since it was announced that he had tested positive for coronavirus on 27 March.
He chaired a coronavirus meeting via video-link on Friday morning.
He was last seen in public applauding the NHS and other key workers from his flat in Downing Street on Thursday.

I wish him a quick and speedy recovery.
Not a time to play party politics and health is much more important.
Hope to see him back to full strength as soon as possible.

Hope he recovers soon. Regardless of politics the country needs leadership at the moment. Cracks in the government are already beginning to appear.

Any government would be under pressure with the current situation and whereas I agree that we need the leader back I’m not sure I agree that cracks are appearing.

Where's that, then...?
Only 'issue' I've seen today is the Scottish one and that is seemingly resolved
Wish Boris and anyone else suffering right now a full and speedy recovery

What tests will Boris Johnson undergo?
The UK prime minister will wake up in hospital this morning, 10 days after he tested positive for coronavirus.
Boris Johnson will have a series of routine health tests, a spokesperson said. But what will they include?
Dr Sarah Jarvis, a GP and broadcaster, told the BBC that Johnson would be likely to have his chest X-rayed and his lungs scanned, particularly if he was struggling for breath.
She said he was also likely to have an electrocardiogram to check his heart function, as well as tests on his oxygen levels, white blood cell count, and liver and kidney function.
The PM was "still very much in charge of the government" and is being "constantly updated", Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick said.
Former Labour Prime Minister Tony Blair described the situation facing Mr Johnson as "hellish".
“I wish him well and I hope he has a speedy recovery I have every sympathy and solidarity with him," Blair said. "I know it must be a hellish situation to be in."

Johnson in good spirits after comfortable night - spokesman
Jonathan Blake
BBC political correspondent
UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson is in "good spirits" and had “a comfortable night” at St Thomas' Hospital in London, Downing Street has said.
Mr Johnson "remains in hospital under observation", the PM’s official spokesman told reporters.
"The PM spoke with a doctor and was able to set out that his symptoms remained persistent," he added. The spokesman described the symptoms as "a temperature and a cough".
On reports the prime minister has received oxygen treatment, the spokesman said he did not know the origin of those reports and urged caution.
The prime minister remains in charge of the government but the daily COVID-19 response meeting was taken this morning by Dominic Raab as First Secretary of State.
"He is receiving updates in hospital and continuing to receive a box," the spokesman said, referring to the ministerial red box with briefings and papers for sign-off.

Prime minister in intensive care
BBC Political editor Laura Kuenssberg says Boris Johnson is in intensive care, having been taken to hospital on Sunday with symptoms of coronavirus.

The Secretary of State for Wales Simon Hart has sent his "warmest wishes to the prime minister and, of course, Carrie, for whom this must be an especially worrying time."
Boris Johnson has been moved to intensive care in hospital after his coronavirus symptoms "worsened", Downing Street has said.
His pregnant fiancee Carrie Symonds has been self-isolating after suffering coronavirus symptoms.
In February they announced they were engaged and are expecting a baby in early summer.
Mr Hart added: "The Boris we all know is a fighter and a winner. He will tackle this setback as he does every other challenge in life, and I wish him well for a full and speedy recovery.”
