Premier League warns PFA of £762m penalty if season is voided
By Dan Roan & Simon Stone

The Premier League faces a £762m financial penalty if the season does not resume, players have been told

Saturday 4th April 2020

Such a penalty would apply if broadcasters demanded refunds on games they could not show, the league said during a conference call on Saturday.

During the call with the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA), the Premier League explained why it wants players to drop wages by 30%.

Clubs and players will discuss the plan with talks set to go into next week.

That is because the Premier League is not mandated to make such a decision and it has to be agreed by the players and coaches.

As well as the PFA, which is the players' union, representatives from the League Managers' Association - the managers' union - were also involved in Saturday's call, which was concluded in less than an hour with no agreement reached.
During the meeting, the league said the season will almost certainly be played behind closed doors if it resumes.

It also warned that, in addition to the penalties payable to broadcasters, hundreds of millions of pounds could be lost in sponsorship and matchday revenue because the season has been suspended.

The Premier League announced on Friday that it would ask players to take a 30% pay cut in order to protect jobs.

There are issues to be sorted out, though, as the PFA and leading agents think wage deferrals rather than cuts are preferable at this stage.

My heart bleeds for them, it won't be the Premier League that decides when football can resume it will be the medical experts and the scientists who advise the government.

The world will change when we come out of this pandemic. The socialising of debt but privatising of profit should never had been allowed in the banking sector crisis of 2008 but this pales into insignificance.

Premier league clubs have asked the government to subsidise their operational costs, so for me government "interference" has been invited in. For me the tax scheme needs to alter quite dramatically as the lower paid (doctors excluded) have bore the brunt of the pandemic response. Footballers, entertainers, graphic designers, communications, bankers, stock brokers and every other consultant are not really important to the base of your Maslow hierarchy.

Football but especially the premier league clubs have scored an own goal in asking for furlough payments. They could have stated they were independent of the new future, but fcuk em.

Totally agree.
Also if the Premier League lose all that money, GOOD!
The amount of money in football is scandalous.
Need to be brought down to earth big time!

Absolute bollocks!
The players are not being told its a wage cap.
They are being told 'Do the right thing and take a 30% cut'. That is not a wage cap so legal.

What the players, are saying is, a wage cut will benefit the rich owners mainly foreign.
They would rather donate directly to the NHS.
Football could be about to implode.

After listening to a financial expert this afternoon (not a member fo this Forum :laughing6: ) I can see the value in players donating a proportion of their net salary rather than it being taken as a pay cut...

Taxes are maintained and any proportion of salary donated can go directly to where it is needed, e.g. NHS and/or other needy COVID-19 causes

It isn’t about cutting their wages, it’s about their clubs screwing over every other member of their staff but keeping players sweet and players accepting this. No premier league club; especially last years champions league finalists should never be furloughing staff, and the more this drags out, the worse it is looking.

I have said before it shouldn’t be down to anyone to tell players what to do, players should see what is happening at their clubs and step forward. The fact they are hiding behind a union suggests they really don’t want to do anything perhaps other than a token gesture. After all, they are the stars aren’t they.

Football is not what it was, and this is compounding that thought. I hope the league does get penalised just to see how players react then. They will soon have something to say.

Ask all players above League one to donate 20% of their wages to their community or better still hospitals or the NHS locally, and name and shame those that refuse so the fans can let them know what they think when they start playing again!
