The total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Spain rose to 188,068 on Friday as the daily death toll increased from 551 on Thursday, to 585.

Only the US and Italy have had more confirmed fatalities than Spain, which has recorded 19,478 deaths in total. And Spain has the second highest amount of confirmed cases anywhere in the world, behind the US.

Spanish health authorities have identified 5,252 new cases of the virus - which represents an increase of 2.9%.

The update comes a day after figures from regional officials suggested the true national death toll could be much higher than previously reported.

On Thursday Catalonia almost doubled its regional tally as it changed its methodology to also include deaths in nursing homes and private homes for the first time.

Spain reports lowest death toll in four weeks

Spain said 399 people died of Covid-19 over the past 24 hours in what was the lowest daily number of deaths in four weeks, the government said on Monday.

The latest figures, which showed a slight drop from Sunday when 410 people died, brought further relief to a country which has suffered the third-highest number of virus deaths in the world after the United States and Italy.

"Today for the first time we've fallen under 400 deaths, although it's only a little lower (than Sunday), these figures give us hope," said Fernando Simon, the health ministry's emergencies coordinator.

"These are very encouraging figures," he said.

Italy sees first decline in active infections

Italian authorities say the number of people officially identified as infected with coronavirus has fallen for the first time since the country's outbreak began.

"For the first time, we have seen a new positive development: the number of currently positive has declined," civil protection agency chief Angelo Borrelli told reporters.

As of Monday, there were 108,237 people either being treated in hospital or recovering at home after testing positive, 20 fewer than the previous day - a small but symbolic drop.

On Sunday, the increase of active positive cases was 486.

Italy has the third-highest number of Covid-19 cases in the world after Spain and the US. However, as people who die at home or in care facilities are not included in its figures, many doctors believe its actual death and infection rates may be higher than the official tallies.

Italy to begin loosening lockdown measures from May 4

Giuseppe Conte, Italy's prime minister, has confirmed that the country can start reopening on May 4, but he doused any hopes of a total loosening of some of the strictest lockdown measures in a western democracy, reports Nick Squires.

"Many citizens are tired of the efforts that have been made so far and would like a significant loosening of these measures, or even their total abolition," Conte said in a Facebook post, adding that "a decision of that kind would be irresponsible."

Conte indicated that moves to relax the restrictions would be announced by the end of the week, and that they would take into account the different circumstances among regions.

Italy's north, hardest-hit by the virus and the country's economic engine, has been straining to restart industry after a shutdown of nonessential manufacturing on March 26 - even as some have received permission to reopen with a much-reduced workforce in recent days.

Face masks are to be compulsory throughout Germany as Spain seeks to extend its lockdown. Here’s the latest from Europe:

Italy’s death toll climbed to 25,085 on Wednesday, rising by 437 compared with 534 the day before. The number of people currently confirmed ill with the virus fell for the third consecutive day, and the number of people in intensive care also continued to decline

In France a further 544 people have died with coronavirus. The tally - 336 in hospital and 208 in care homes - brought France's total Covid-19 death toll to 21,340

All 16 states in Germany have now announced plans to make face masks compulsory. While some states will not make them mandatory for people while shopping, everyone throughout the country will have to wear face coverings on public transport

Spain is seeking to extend its state of emergency for a further two weeks, until 9 May. Speaking in parliament today Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said the country could start to loosen restrictions in the second half of May, provided authorities managed to stay “on top of the virus”

100,000 deaths reported in past 16 days

It took 90 days from the first reported death in Wuhan, China, on 11 January for countries to record more than 100,000 confirmed coronavirus fatalities.

Just 16 days later, that total has passed 200,000. But which countries have been hardest hit?

The US has suffered the largest death toll, with more than 52,400 recorded.

Italy, for weeks the epicentre of Europe's pandemic, has seen 26,384 deaths and is now beginning to talk about a new "Phase Two", when it can start reopening society

Spain, France and the UK are the other countries to report death tolls above 20,000.

In Spain, children under 14 will finally be allowed outside for the first time in six weeks on Sunday. French PM Edouard Philippe has just said he will detail his country's plan to relax the lockdown on Tuesday.

Among the most severely affected countries, Belgium has the highest number of deaths per capita, with six deaths per 100,000 people compared with 4.9 in Spain and 1.6 in the US.

But, unlike many countries, Belgium records suspected coronavirus deaths in care homes while many other countries have reported these at a later stage.

Today's figures marked the third successive daily fall in deaths and were sharply down from 415 yesterday.

Italy has outlined plans to ease the restrictions it imposed seven weeks ago to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said the measures would be relaxed from 4 May, with people being allowed to visit their relatives in small numbers.

Parks, factories and building sites will reopen, but schools will not restart classes until September.

Roman Catholic bishops have written to Mr Conte to protest against the continued ban on church services.

It comes as the country recorded its lowest number of new confirmed cases since the outbreak began.

There were 333 new virus-related deaths on Monday, a slight rise on the 260 recorded on Sunday, to a total of 26,977 - still the highest recorded toll in Europe.

But the number of new cases was at its lowest since 10 March, and the number of people in intensive care also dropped.
