Coronavirus deaths in the UK

Across the UK, 16,060 people have died with coronavirus in hospitals, as of 5pm on 18 April - the latest official UK-wide figures available.

This figure, and the numbers below, are expected to be higher when non-hospital deaths are taken into account.

In England the total number of coronavirus deaths in hospitals is 14,400

A total of 575 people have died in Wales

There have been 194 deaths reported in Northern Ireland

In Scotland, 903 people who tested positive for coronavirus have died

The tallies for individual nations can differ from the UK-wide total, because they are calculated on a different time-frame.

In terms of testing, 372,967 people have been tested across the UK, of which 120,067 tested positive.

We expect to hear another update on these figures this afternoon (UK time).

Sunak on UK's latest coronavirus figures

Mr Sunak has also been talking about the latest UK coronavirus figures.

He says the UK has now carried out 501,379 tests for coronavirus, with 19,316 tests carried out yesterday.

He says 124,743 people have tested positive for the virus, 17,971 people are in hospital with coronavirus in the UK and sadly 16,509 who were in hospital with coronavirus have died.

The UK government has promised it will dramatically increase coronavirus testing to 100,000 a day by the end of the month.

How many cases are there in your area of the UK?

Latest figures released earlier show 4,676 new cases of coronavirus in the UK in a day.

That is significantly lower than the 5,850 reported on Sunday - which saw the second highest daily increase in new infections since the outbreak began.

Meanwhile, a further 449 people have died with coronavirus in hospitals across the country.

But health officials warned that there can be a delay in the numbers of deaths reported over the weekend - with some hard-pressed hospitals understandably taking longer to record and report their own figures.

Three in 10 deaths linked to virus in England and Wales

More than three in 10 deaths in England and Wales are linked to coronavirus, figures show.

The Office for National Statistics said in the week ending 10 April, the virus was mentioned on 6,213 death certificates.

It pushed the total number of deaths in that week to over 18,000 - the highest weekly total since the start of 2000.

The number of coronavirus deaths in care homes has doubled

The statistics show the total number of deaths in care homes has doubled in the last month, when first deaths linked to COVID-19 were registered.

The figures show 4,927 deaths in the week ending April 10, up from 2,471 a week, a month earlier.

Separate estimates have suggested at least 7,500 deaths in care homes had been linked to coronavirus by last weekend.

What is the UK's REAL coronavirus death toll? Statistics show disparity between official daily count and true number is as high as 41% - as data shows 1,644 people have now died in care homes in England and Wales

Office for National Statistics recorded 13,121 COVID-19 deaths by April 10

Department of Health figures by that time, however, only showed 9,288

21 April 2020 | UPDATED: 10:46 BST, 21 April 2020

The true number of coronavirus victims in the UK may still be 41 per cent higher than daily Government statistics are letting on.

Weekly data published today by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed that at least 13,121 people had died in England and Wales by April 10.

Department of Health statistics had, by that date, announced only 9,288 fatalities - the backdated deaths increased the total by 41.2 per cent. That suggests the death toll of 16,509 confirmed yesterday could actually be more like 23,000.

And care homes in England and Wales had recorded the deaths of at least 1,644 residents by April 10 - today's figures reveal one of the first real glimpses of the crisis unfolding in the care industry.

Another 25 people have died after testing positive for coronavirus in Wales, bringing the total number of deaths to 609.

Public Health Wales statistics show 304 new cases, bringing the total number of known Covid-19 cases to 7,850.

Scotland death toll rises by 70

The number of people who have died in hospitals in Scotland after testing positive for coronavirus has risen by 70 in a day, to a total of 985.

So far, there have now been 8,672 confirmed cases of the virus in Scotland - an increase of 222 over 24 hours.

These numbers do not include deaths in the community, in places such as care homes.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said she was cautiously optimistic that the increase in cases was stabilising.

UK-wide figures are expected later.

Hospital coronavirus deaths in England increase by 778

England's hospital death toll from coronavirus rises to 15,607, up from 14,829.

The number of cases has also increased by 4,301 in 24 hours, bringing the total of 129,044.

Meanwhile, 18,206 tests were carried out on Monday, the government said. Ministers have set a target of 100,000 tests a day by the end of April.

The latest death figures do not include those in the community, in places such as care homes. There is a longer time lag in that data but you can find the latest here.

Health officials have previously warned against over-interpreting daily figures of people dying, with many hard-pressed hospitals understandably not reporting deaths over a weekend until the middle of the following week.

Vaccine could be available this year, says UK scientist

Two scientists who are leading the charge for a vaccine in the UK have been speaking to the BBC about their projects.

Professor Sarah Gilbert is head of a team at the University of Oxford. Trials, which have had 5,000 volunteers, are set to begin on Thursday.

"We just start with two people on the first day, to make sure that everything is well with them, and also that all the procedures are working for the trial and that we are ready to move on to larger numbers."

Professor Robin Shattock, who leads Imperial College London's effort, said if either project provides the "right signal in terms of safety and efficacy", a vaccine could be available for the UK's front-line workers and the most vulnerable before the end of the year.

But he said it would be next year before it could be rolled out around the world.

UK social restrictions 'to remain for rest of year'

Some social restrictions are expected to remain in the UK for at least the rest of the year, the government's chief medical adviser has said.

Prof Chris Whitty said it was "wholly unrealistic" to expect life would suddenly return to normal soon.

He said the ideal way out would be via a "highly effective vaccine" or treatment drugs but said the chances of having these within the next year was "incredibly small".

"This disease is not going to be eradicated, it is not going to disappear," he said, at the government's daily coronavirus briefing.

"So we have to accept that we are working with a disease that we are going to be with globally... for the foreseeable future."

Analysis: UK death figures suggest gradual decline from peak

Robert Cuffe

BBC head of statistics

Tuesday’s jump to 823 deaths reported in a day didn’t mean that the epidemic was growing again.

Today’s fall to 616 doesn’t mean that it’s disappearing rapidly.

The pattern in these data is still a gradual, bumpy decline from a peak of 980 on 10 April.

The peaks and troughs are exacerbated by reporting lags, especially at weekends.

The picture of decline is further supported by NHS England’s analysis of deaths on the day they actually occur – this shows a smooth rise to a peak in the week before Easter and a smoother, gradual decline since then.

New lockdown rules announced in Wales and tests for essential workers

New lockdown rules issued for people in Wales

The new rules will clamp down on second home owners and day-trippers while helping to get more businesses open

By Sion Morgan Assistant Content Editor

FRIDAY 24 APR 2020

The Welsh Government has announced new lockdown regulations which will come into force this weekend to stop people from travelling outside the local area where they live.

The new tightened rules will clampdown on people making excessive non-essential journeys and are specifically set to impact second home owners.

At the same time rules have been relaxed to allow people with particular health conditions or disabilities to leave home to exercise more than once a day. This will help families with children with learning disabilities and autism in particular.

And the Welsh Government has announced new regulations for businesses which will allow some to re-open and operate "click and collect" services.

A spokesman for the Welsh government said the stay-at-home regulations have been revised in Wales "to continue to prevent the spread of coronavirus."

The key change:

Takeaway food outlets remain closed.

The Welsh Government is changing the core requirement for people not to leave the place where they live to a requirement not to leave or remain away from that place .

"This will help clarify that people who leave their home with a reasonable excuse – such as going out to shop for food, for healthcare or for work – cannot remain outside to do other things," the Welsh Government spokesman said.

Other changes, that will come into force at 00:01 on Saturday, include:

Applying the 2m physical distancing duty on premises used for “click and collect” style services – this duty is already in place for other workplaces, which remain open.

Widening the definition of vulnerable person to include other specific groups or conditions where people could benefit from assistance and to whom providing supplies is a reasonable excuse for another person to leave home (for example, people with dementia).

Extending the physical distancing duty to cafés accessible by the public in hospitals, and those responsible for canteens in schools, prisons and for use by the armed forces, to ensure all reasonable measures are put in place.

Social distancing 'to last all year'

The Welsh Government has also asked the four police forces in Wales to provide further advice about whether existing provisions intended to prevent people from travelling to second homes in Wales need to be further strengthened.

Announcing today’s changes to the regulations, which follow the first statutory three-week review of the law, the First Minister said: “The restrictions are staying in place, which mean you must stay at home to save lives and protect the NHS.

“Over the last few months, we have taken unprecedented steps to protect everyone, but particularly those most at risk from serious illness. This approach has helped the NHS prepare and cope with coronavirus and it has also helped to save many lives.

“The changes we are introducing supplement the rules already in force but they respond to some challenges being faced in parts of the country and by families throughout Wales.

“Our message has not changed – anyone can get coronavirus, anyone can spread it. So please, stay home, protect the NHS, and save lives.”
