'Half of A&E team' test positive for virus

Dr Tim Rogerson is an A&E consultant at Aneurin Bevan University Health Board. He has recorded a video while self-isolating at home after catching coronavirus.

He said about half of the A&E consultants at the Royal Gwent Hospital have swabbed positive for the virus, as well as a similar percentage of the nursing team, which is causing a challenge in staffing the department.

He has also urged everyone to stay home over the Bank Holiday weekend.

"What people do this weekend will have an effect on our ICU capacity in 2 weeks' time," he said.

"It'll have an effect on staff being put at risk and being exposed to coronavirus in a few weeks' time, and ultimately it's going to affect the capacity of the whole hospital system."

UK 'could be worst affected country in Europe'

The Andrew Marr Show

Wellcome Trust director Sir Jeremy Farrar says the UK is “likely to be one of the worst, if not the worst, affected countries in Europe”.

Sir Jeremy, a member of the UK government's Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage), said this was down to the lack of testing and tracing.

He also told the BBC's Andrew Marr a second or third wave of coronavirus was "probably inevitable" and a vaccine was the only way out,

A vaccine could be available by autumn, he added, but it would take months to ramp up manufacturing of it to get to "the scale required to vaccinate many millions of people".

"I would hope we can get done in 12 months," said Sir Jeremy.

The UK is facing its fourth week in lockdown, with the government set to review by Thursday whether social distancing measures can be changed.

Ministers are required by law to assess whether the rules are working, based on expert advice, after three weeks of telling Britons to stay at home.

On Sunday, the UK's total number of hospital deaths reached 10,612.

It comes as Boris Johnson thanked NHS staff after being discharged from hospital on Sunday.

The mother of a nurse who the prime minister specifically praised said she was "exceptionally proud" of her daughter.

Wales' health minister said last week that the coronavirus lockdown would remain for "several more weeks at the very least".

And Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon warned there was "no likelihood or prospect" of measures being lifted after the Easter weekend.

Covid-19 '10 times deadlier than 2009 flu pandemic'

The disease caused by the new coronavirus is 10 times deadlier than the swine flu pandemic of 2009, the head of the World Health Organization (WHO) has said.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said new data from around the world was "giving us a clearer picture about this virus, how it behaves, how to stop it and how to treat it".

"We know that COVID-19 spreads fast, and we know that it is deadly – 10 times deadlier than the 2009 flu pandemic," Dr Tedros said at a briefing in Geneva on Monday.

The 2009 swine flu pandemic, involving the H1N1 influenza virus, is estimated to have killed around 200,000 people around the world.

Easter closure of testing centre 'beggars belief'

The closure of a Covid-19 testing centre for key workers at the Cardiff City Stadium on Monday "beggars belief", the Plaid Cymru leader has said.

Public Health Wales (PHW) said it was closed due to the "low number of key workers anticipated to be working" that day.

But Mr Price questioned the decision at a time when Wales was testing less than other countries.

And the Welsh Conservatives said there was no valid reason to have shut the centre.

The Welsh Government has been asked to comment.

The Cardiff City Stadium centre is one of several drive-in testing centres being set up to provide testing to key workers with symptoms and is the only one operating so far.

Spot On not enough PPE He was telling his family and friends before days later he died - Shocking .
As for the testing base at the CCFC Stadium - This is the reason given by NH WALES -
The coronavirus test centre at Cardiff City Stadium was closed on bank holiday Monday because fewer key workers would be on shift, Public Health Wales (PHW) has said.

The centre, which is one of a series of drive-in testing centres planned in Wales, was closed "in the interests of efficiency," a PHW statement said.

UK government press conference due at 17:00

With Boris Johnson still recovering from coronavirus, it's being led by the Chancellor, Rishi Sunak.

He'll be joined by Prof Stephen Powis, NHS England's medical director, and Prof Yvonne Doyle, from Public Health England.

With today's headlines dominated by concerns for the economy, we can expect Mr Sunak to be questioned about whether the government is doing enough to protect people's jobs and livelihoods.

UK chancellor in no hurry to lift lockdown

Jonathan Blake

BBC political correspondent

The chancellor tackled head-on the Office for Budget Responsibility's report that the UK economy may shrink by more than a third in the short term due to the impact of coronavirus.

He said he was troubled by the figures, acknowledging these were tough times and there would be more to come.

But he tried at least to sound hopeful about the future.

Things would be far worse if the government had not acted, he said, and the plan put in place was the right one and the time would come to “right the ship.” He said the economy would "bounce back."

Righting the ship will involve paying for the huge amount of borrowing that the government has undertaken to fund its unprecedented support measures.

It’s not surprising that Mr Sunak did not get into detail about any future tax rises - but notably he did not commit to keeping the so-called triple lock policy protecting state pensions.

And perhaps an insight into the chancellor's thinking came from his comment that there was no choice between protecting the economy and saving lives.

That may be a sign that he is not in as much of a hurry as some reports have suggested to lift lockdown restrictions sooner rather than later and allow the economy to recover sooner.

'Much too early to talk about reversing UK lockdown'

Professor Peter Openshaw from Imperial College London says there are early signs that the UK lockdown is having a "beneficial effect".

The government is expected to announce an extension to the lockdown on Thursday and Prof Openshaw, who has previously sat on their Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage), told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that talk of removing measures is premature.

"It is much too early to think begin thinking about reversing the lockdown or saying which measures may be lifted," he said.

"At the moment hospital admissions are starting to level off in some parts and slowdown in others. It is not countrywide. It has been worse in London.

"The measures introduced would clearly have had a more beneficial effect if they had been introduced sooner but it may be that the effects of the lockdown will greater in those parts of the country that were behind on the curve."

There have been 60 further coronavirus deaths in Wales, taking the number of deaths in Wales to 463.

Public Health Wales said there were also 272 new cases of Covid-19 in Wales, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 6,118.
