One Covid vaccine cuts infection rate in all age groups -

The chances of becoming infected by Covid fell sharply after a first dose of either the AstraZeneca or Pfizer vaccines, a UK study has found.

The vaccines worked just as well in the over-75s and those with underlying health conditions, as other people.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) and University of Oxford research also found a strong antibody response in all age groups from either jab.

Everyone showed some response to both vaccines, they said.

The research, contained in two studies which have not yet been peer-reviewed or published, is based on virus tests from 370,000 people in the general UK population - one of the largest to date.

It provides further real-world evidence that the vaccines being used in the UK to protect against Covid-19 are effective at protecting people against coronavirus infections.

In the first study, people who had been vaccinated with a single dose of either the Oxford-AstraZeneca or Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines were 65% less likely to get a new Covid infection.

Covid-19: 'Battle not over' amid jab campaign for under-50s -

A new campaign is being launched to encourage younger people to get the Covid vaccine when their turn comes, as the rollout continues down the age ranges.

The Department of Health has released a series of photos documenting the NHS's largest-ever vaccination programme.

They show vaccines given in care homes, cathedrals, museums and stadiums.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said 45.5 million doses had been administered so far, but "the battle is not yet over".

More than 12 million people have now received both doses of a Covid-19 vaccine, while 33.5 million have had at least one dose.

It means half the entire UK population, estimated at 66.7 million, have now received a first dose.

Hi all, please can somebody help me as I've searched on the BBC News website for their "balanced and impartial" news on the massive demonstration in London yesterday against the Government's handling of this pandemic.

Essentially the people who marched had many different concerns but unfortunately I could find nothing on the BBC reporting this. I know I'm not particularly internet savvy but can someone point me to where the BBC have reported this.

I did find a YouTube clip from Sky news, if interested see below. Thanks for your help.

Covid: Pubs and restaurants to reopen outdoors in Wales -

Pubs, cafes and restaurants in Wales can reopen to customers outdoors from Monday.

Up to six people from six households will be able to meet, with social distancing and hygiene measures in place.

Outdoor attractions, such as zoos and theme parks, can also reopen under the latest easing of lockdown.

Wedding receptions and funerals can again be held outdoors at regulated premises with up to 30 people.

Organised outdoor activities, such as sport activities limited to 30 people, are also able to resume.

Hospitality is set to reopen indoors from 17 May, along with increased limits on those who can attend organised events, but this depends on case rates and the make-up of the Welsh government after the election on 6 May.

Covid: No deaths in more than half Wales' council areas -

More than half of local authority areas in Wales had no deaths involving Covid, weekly figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show.

There were no Covid deaths in the Hywel Dda health board area for a second week while Cardiff saw no Covid deaths for the first time in seven months.

Deaths of people with Covid-19 fell slightly to 14 in the week up to 16 April - 71% fewer than a month before.

Deaths from all causes were below average for a seventh successive week.

The 14 deaths involving Covid accounted for 2.2% of all deaths, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

This compares to 19 in the week before. This is still lower than for any other week since 25 September and fluctuations are to be expected with numbers now so low.

The trend has seen a steady decline to the point where there have been 71% fewer Covid deaths registered than just a month ago.

Wales has reported no further Covid-related deaths in the last 24 hours for the fourth time in the last eight days.

Wales' case rate has dropped to its lowest since 1 September, with 11.9 cases per 100,000. The positivity rate of 1.3% of all tests is at its lowest level for nearly eight months.

Public Health Wales confirmed 35 new Covid cases on Wednesday and no deaths.

Wales is now averaging about 50 Covid positive tests a day, compared to about 3,000 at the peak in December.

The number of people who have died with coronavirus since the start of the pandemic remains at 5,548 while the total number of cases stands at 211,389.

PHW's figures show that more 1.8m people - almost 60% of Wales' population - have now had their first dose of the Covid vaccine while 715,425 have had two doses, which is more than a fifth of the population.

More than 70 of people in their 40s in Wales have now had a first Covid vaccine dose as have more than a third of people in their 30s.

Covid in Wales: Why are some in their 20s getting a jab first?

A higher proportion of younger people have had a Covid jab in north Wales than those who are older, figures show.

Betsi Cadwaladr health board said 14% of people aged 18 to 29 had been vaccinated, compared to 9% of those between the ages of 30 and 39.

It is operating two "streams" of vaccination - one for those aged 30 to 49, and another for 18 to 29-year-olds.

The Oxford jab is being used for older people, with the younger group receiving a Pfizer dose.

It follows a review by the UK drugs regulator into the link between the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine and rare blood clots.

As a result, the UK government's vaccine advisory group, the JCVI, recommended people aged 18 to 29 be offered an alternative vaccine where available.

Covid-19: Scientist urges patience before 17 May lockdown relaxation -

People need to be "patient for a short period" ahead of the next planned relaxation of Covid rules in England, a government scientific adviser has said.

Prof Sir Mark Walport said there was "very good news" in the progress of the pandemic, but many people were still not vaccinated yet.

He told the BBC there is still a "potential for that spark to reignite" and cause infections to rise.

But restaurateur Hugh Osmond called for a faster reopening before 17 May.

That date has been set at the likely next stage for relaxing restrictions in England and is expected to include allowing pubs, cafes and restaurants to serve customers indoors.

International travel is also expected to resume with a traffic-light system grading destinations on their risk level.

It comes as a further seven deaths within 28 days of positive Covid tests were reported on Saturday - and 1,907 more cases.

Covid: Bubbles begin and gyms open as Welsh restrictions ease -

Some families and friends will be able to hug for the first time in months and fitness fans can get back to gyms as lockdown restrictions ease in Wales.

From Monday two households, plus another living on their own, will be able to form a "bubble" to meet and have contact indoors.

Gyms, swimming pools and community centres can also reopen after major changes to restrictions.

It comes as Wales' case rate has fallen to its lowest point in eight months.

Under major changes to restrictions to our daily lives, organised children's indoor activities - like sports classes, scouts, guides and parent and baby classes - will also be able to restart after for the first time since the December lockdown.

Covid: 1m plus rule could end from 21 June, says Johnson -

There is a "good chance" the 1m plus social distancing rule can be scrapped on 21 June in England, the prime minister has said.

Boris Johnson said the results of the vaccine rollout are "really starting to show up in the epidemiology" - but any change would depend on the data.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer agreed that caution was necessary.

Mr Johnson also suggested there could be some "opening up" of foreign travel on 17 May.

During a campaign visit to Hartlepool the prime minister said ministers would say more about travel "as soon as we can" but "we have got to be very, very tough".

He said that "the way things are going" with the vaccine rollout, the 1m plus rule - which allows people to be 1m apart if they take extra precautions such as wearing face coverings - could end when England reaches the final step of its roadmap out of lockdown.

Mr Johnson said 50 million doses of coronavirus vaccine have been administered. That includes more than 34 million people who have had a first dose and more than 15 million who have had a second, according to the latest government figures.

Another Covid lockdown unlikely, says scientist -

It is unlikely that there will be more lockdowns in the UK, the scientist whose modelling led to the first nationwide restrictions has said.

Prof Neil Ferguson told the BBC the UK is "likely to be on a steady course now out of this pandemic".

However, he said there could be a "roll back" of some freedoms if any new variants proved resistant to vaccines.

Ministers have said further lockdown easing will go ahead in England if the data supports it.

On Tuesday, the government's coronavirus dashboard recorded 1,946 new infections, as well as four deaths within 28 days of a positive test across the UK.

The recorded number of deaths is often lower immediately after weekends and bank holidays due to reporting lags.

More than 50 million Covid vaccinations have been given in the UK so far, with 34,667,904 first doses and 15,630,007 second doses.

Covid: Britons fly via Turkey to avoid costly quarantine -

UK travellers returning from "red list" countries are flying home via Turkey to avoid hefty hotel quarantine fees.

Passengers are breaking their journey in Istanbul, and staying in hotels there for a fraction of the cost they would have to pay in Britain.

Travellers from countries on the red list would otherwise face bills of up to £1,750-per-person to isolate in a hotel if they flew to the UK directly.

Those using the route must still quarantine at home once back in the UK.

One hotel worker in Istanbul said he had seen British nationals flying in from Pakistan, India and Bangladesh - which are all on the UK's red list.

The BBC has also spoken to travellers returning from Pakistan to the UK, many of whom were attending weddings or funerals and say they couldn't afford the cost of quarantining once the rules changed.

As long as they isolate at home for 10 days after returning from a non-red list country, they are not breaking the UK government's Covid rules.

Thanks for that Tone......but, doesn't it make us humble laymen think about what is going on here?

People will always find a legal route to bypass draconian laws. Many more will find an illegal route.

I pass no judgement, but I do get annoyed with the restrictions placed on me and my extended family........who I haven't seen for months. If I get lucky I may be "allowed" to hug my own Mother.....seriously?

UK economy set to grow at fastest rate in more than 70 years -

The UK economy will enjoy its fastest growth in more than 70 years in 2021 as Covid-19 restrictions are lifted, according to the Bank of England.

The economy is expected to expand by 7.25% this year, with extra government spending helping to limit job losses.

However, it follows a contraction of 9.9% in 2020, the biggest in 300 years.

Andrew Bailey, the governor of the Bank of England, said the recovery was "strong" but likened it to "more of a bounce back" than a boom.

He added that the surge in growth, while "good news", would only return the UK economy back to its 2019 size.

Mr Bailey told the BBC: "We're going to see a continued strong recovery this year, but let's put that into perspective.

"That's two years passed with no growth in the economy."

His comments came as Bank policymakers held interest rates at a record low of 0.1%.

Champions League final: Fans should not travel to Turkey, says UK government -

Chelsea and Manchester City fans should not travel to Turkey for the Champions League final, the UK government has said after adding the country to England's travel red list.

The final is due to take place in Istanbul on 29 May.

Transport secretary Grant Shapps said Covid-19 red list countries "should not be visited except in the most extreme circumstances".

He added that the government was open to hosting the game in the UK.

Uefa had hoped to give both clubs a minimum of 4,000 tickets each for the game at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium.

Schapps said that the Football Association is in talks with Uefa about switching the game, but that it is "ultimately a decision for Uefa".

"The UK has a successful track record of hosting matches with spectators so we are well placed to do it," he said.

"So we are very open to it, but it is actually in the end a decision for Uefa to make. But given it is two English clubs in the final, we look forward to hearing what they have to say."

Which countries are on the green list for foreign holidays?

From 17 May, people in England will be allowed to take holidays abroad in a small number of countries.

Portugal and Israel are among the permitted destinations on the government's green list, which tourists will be able to visit without having to quarantine on their return.

Countries are in three categories - green, amber and red. Green countries have the fewest rules.

Their status depends partly on the number of Covid-19 cases in each country and the success of their vaccine rollout.

Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have not yet announced plans to restart foreign holidays.
