Historic deaths not included in today's Government toll

The number of people in the UK who have died after testing positive for Covid-19 is 556 higher than the equivalent total announced yesterday, although the Government is reporting the day-on-day change as 111.

The reason for the difference in these two figures is to do with how deaths are being incorporated into historic data retrospectively.

Yesterday's cumulative total announced by the Department of Health was 38,489, which is 556 below today's cumulative total of 39,045.But since yesterday, 445 deaths have been added to the historic data.

These additional deaths are linked to cases that have been identified through testing that has been carried out by commercial partners, rather than testing that has been done in NHS and Public Health England laboratories.

Rather than include these 445 deaths in today's increase, the Department of Health has incorporated them within the previous cumulative total, to create a notional total for yesterday of 38,934 (38,489 + 445).

The difference between this notional total of 38,934 and today's total of 39,045 is 111, and this is the one being reported by the Government.

Some perspective. A good read.

https://thecritic.co.uk/were-all-in-the ... mbers-now/

Our statistics agencies are only now following Italy’s lead and publishing the comorbidities of those dying from covid-19, and it is now clear just how extreme is the amplification of risk. 95% of victims dying with covid-19 have serious pre-existing conditions: not just background illnesses, but severe enough to be mentioned as causes of death on death certificates. The most prevalent are dementia and diabetes (a quarter of cases, each), hypertension (a fifth) and serious lung, kidney or heart disease (around a sixth each). In both the UK and Italy, the average victim had three comorbidities severe enough to be causes of death on a certificate.

Second: who hasn’t it killed? Parents, unions and nervy adults fret about the risk, but there is little need. With no serious pre-existing conditions, the young-ish and healthy are far more likely to be hit by lightning (49 occurrences per annum in UK) than to die of covid-19 (33 in England under age 40, of which only 3 under the age of 19). Panning out, among healthy under 60s (i.e. children and the vast majority of our working population), 253 people have died of covid-19 in English hospitals; this compares to 400 (non-suicide) drownings per year in the UK. And taking all age-groups where there are no pre-existing conditions serious enough to be mentioned as contributary causes of death, covid-19 has taken about 2/3rds the lives that British roads do every year, and we wouldn’t think of outlawing driving, swimming or going outside in a storm.

Even taking all deaths where covid-19 is mentioned on the death certificate regardless of age or comorbidities, looking at the total toll: 43,000 lives is less than 2018’s excess winter deaths and would count as a bad, but by no means remarkable, influenza year.

Sweden admits it DID get it wrong on coronavirus: Expert behind country's refusal to enter lockdown says he would have imposed tougher restrictions 'if we knew what we know now'

Anders Tegnell, Sweden's state epidemiologist, has admitted he made the wrong call on the country's coronavirus lockdown for the first time

Tegnell admits too many people have died after he shunned mandatory rules

He now believes Sweden should have taken harsher measures to stop the spread

Sweden's state epidemiologist has admitted he made the wrong call on the country's coronavirus lockdown for the first time.

Anders Tegnell, who was behind the decision to shun full lockdown in favour of voluntary social distancing measures, now admits that too many people have died under his strategy.

Asked to battle the same disease again with the benefit of hindsight, Tegnell said he would bring in tougher measures to slow the spread.

Coronavirus: Deaths at lowest level since March - BBC News

Getty Images Patient entering an ambulance
The number of people dying each week linked to coronavirus has dropped to its lowest levels in the UK since March, figures show.

The review of death certificates by national statisticians showed 2,872 cases where the virus was mentioned in the week ending 22 May.

Overall there were 13,800 deaths in that week - 2,500 more than normal at this time of the year.

At the peak of the pandemic double the number were dying than expected.

Overall, there have been 190,000 deaths during the pandemic - nearly 62,000 above what would be expected.

This is known as the excess death rate and is said to be the best guide to the impact of the virus as it takes into account deaths linked to infections and indirect deaths that maybe related to the lockdown from factors such as lack of access to care for other conditions and mental health problems.

Some 48,000 of the deaths have been attributed to coronavirus.

Latest government figures report that 39,369 people with coronavirus have died in the UK, across all settings, with an increase of 324 deaths on Monday's figures. There were 1,613 new positive cases recorded in the past day.

Social distancing has all but gone in some areas. We've seen the beaches, we've seen the marches and we're seeing large scale street parties being broke up becoming a regular occurrence. One of 500 people in Brent last night. A very large one in Hackney at the weekend and another large one in Handsworth, Birmingham last week. Fair play to MP Dawn Butler she's criticised the one in Brent but nothing from Diane Abbot or Khalid Mahmood on the parties held in their areas. We just don't have any personal responsibility.

Just watched Dispatches on channel 4 about the early stages of the virus. Not sure if I heard this right, but I’m sure when discussing the Liverpool v Athletico Madrid match in March, they said it was ok for it to go ahead as the ‘science’ said the spread at this type of outdoor event was minimal. Not sure if the scientists regret that now but with that in mind, will crowds at games be a problem when the virus is under control? Think they said the main issue was not at the game but spreading it in pubs etc before and after.....

Football and sport in general cannot wait on an assumption that they'll be a vaccine! That could be an undetermined time away if indeed one is found And experts differ on the possibility.

If that is correct. Why not? With all this unused capacity of testing availability. There was an apparent 80,000 test capacity not used one day recently.
The care homes should be requesting testing, not wait to be contacted. Mobile or postal test facilities have been available in England for weeks.
