First taste of victory for Sanderson

It has taken just three appearances for our Dion Sanderson to record a goal contribution in his time with Cardiff City. After having bided his time as a spectator, Sanderson has now been included in the Welsh side’s last three games, managing a full 90 minutes in his last two.

In the club’s latest Championship outing, the defender recorded his first assist in the professional ranks amidst a 2-0 victory over Barnsley. First, he was involved in the build-up of the opening goal as a ball caused panic in the Barnsley box and led Will Vaulks to poke the ball home to put Neil Harris’ side ahead.

A minute later, Sanderson was rewarded for his efforts with a direct assist. His clever lofted through-ball alluded the Barnsley defenders and found Callum Paterson who made sure the side took all three points. After experiencing a loss and a draw in his last two, this was Sanderson’s first taste of victory, earning him a place in the whoscored.com 'Championship Team of the Week'.

Dion Sanderson looks like having a big future at Wolverhampton Wanderers and Wolves are continually monitoring his progress.

That's why they (Wolves) allowed him out on loan and it is currently to theirs and our benefit

Come that day, he will return to Wolves a better and more experienced player with gratitude from the Bluebirds for his considerable efforts and unlikely to return :(

Perhaps we can go down this route a bit more in the future young and hungry to play, not like murphy who play when he feels like it and other times cannot be bothered, its a short career so enjoy it.

So the the thinking that he’ll be here next year is possibly wide of the mark

Mate, that is possible I guess but the word is that Wolves see him as their future, so talk of an agreed deal to bring him back is perhaps a little wide of the mark at this point

I'd love to see it on current viewing though. Makes Jazz look very pedestrian tbh :)

I suppose another loan for the year is the best we can hope for then mate

A good example of how the loan market can work to all parties benefit. A talented youngster who’d only get a first team game at Wolves if there was an injury crisis, learning his trade at a decent level and enhancing City’s performances, and will go back to them miles better for the experience.

Compared to the nonsense like JLloyd Samuel and Steven Bywater etc

Cardiff City's chances of signing Albert Adomah and Dion Sanderson and the Nottingham Forest and Wolves view of it happening

The two January loan signings have really impressed, but what are the Bluebirds' chances of signing them in the summer? We take a closer look

Albert Adomah and Dion Sanderson have both impressed since joining Cardiff City on loan

Cardiff City's two January loan signings have certainly impressed since their deadline-day moves.

Dion Sanderson has emerged as a really bright prospect in recent weeks, while Albert Adomah has churned out consistently strong performances for the Bluebirds.

Young Sanderson, on loan from Wolves, is still just 20, but his contract at Molineux runs out after next season, which has reportedly prompted a scramble among some Premier League clubs to sign him this summer.

He is certainly a top talent in the making, that's for sure, and Cardiff fans are desperate to see him come back next season.

Adomah, meanwhile, is perhaps at the other end of his career. The Ghanaian winger, 32, also sees his Nottingham Forest contract expire in the summer of 2021, which might mean that, should City decide to, they might be able to get him for a relatively modest fee this summer.

But what are the chances of Cardiff signing either player this summer, permanently or on another loan deal?

We asked the experts...

Alex Dicken – Wolves reporter at the Birmingham Mail

What have you thought of Dion Sanderson's loan so far?

I haven't seen much of Sanderson for Cardiff to be honest, but the glimpses I have caught impressed me.

I had my own doubts as to whether he would get games at a club in the thick of the play-off race in the Championship, but I'm happy to say I've been proven wrong.

He's always been one of the better performers in Wolves' under-23s, but a move to the second tier seemed a leap.

I was very impressed with him in his Cardiff debut against Nottingham Forest and it's nice to see that he's improved since.

What is Wolves' long-term plan for him, how do they view him?

Sanderson is undoubtedly one of Wolves' most-talented youngsters and he plays in a position where the first team is a little light.

Oskar Buur has been given the nod until the end of the season but there's no obvious competitor to first choice right wing-back Matt Doherty.

This loan with Cardiff, if it carries on in the same vein, will go a long way toward convincing Wolves to persevere with Sanderson.

Nuno has always spoken highly of Sanderson, as he has done with other youngsters.

He was taken on Wolves' pre-season tour of China last summer and made a big impression before being named in a few early season squads.

He is a player people that Wolves' academy rate highly, but the gap between the club's under-23s and first team has never been bigger.

Cardiff City player Dion Sanderson has impressed since joining on loan from Wolves

Could he leave again on loan, or does he have a chance of breaking into the first team?

A lot will depend on Wolves' summer recruitment but my belief at the moment is that Sanderson will probably head out on loan.

Nuno tends to keep a small squad and rely on a few under-23 players to supplement it.

Wolves' choice with Sanderson next season will be to loan him out or have him play for the club's second string again.

With the under-23s seemingly heading for Premier League 2 Division 2, that isn't something that's likely to appeal to Sanderson when he's proved himself at a much higher level with Cardiff.

What are Cardiff's chances of signing him on a permanent deal? None really

What Wolves have done with their academy in recent years is turn a profit.

There haven't been dozens of kids making the grade, but they have made plenty of cash.

It will all depend on whether Wolves are willing to wait for Sanderson to make the first-team jump, which could take a little while longer yet.

I think there's a chance Cardiff could sign him permanently, but another loan looks more likely at this stage.

Sarah Clapson – Nottingham Forest correspondent at the Nottingham Post

What have you made of Albert Adomah's loan spell so far?

It sounds like he’s doing well, which is good to hear - although Forest may well wish they’d kept hold of him, if he’s in that kind of form.

He’d not been a regular starter in the first part of the season, so seems like he’s feeling the benefit of getting more game time.

He’s a big character and looks like he’s shown that at Cardiff, too.

What is Forest’s long-term plan for him, how do they view him?

It’s tough to say.

He had mostly been used as a substitute in the first half of the season, and with Forest having brought in Adama Diakhaby on loan in January, they probably felt they had enough options on the wing.

Diakhaby hasn’t really made the impact it was hoped, though, so it would be a surprise if his stay is extended.

And that probably means Forest have a decision to make on Adomah.

Could he leave again on loan? Or will it be a case of ‘he is staying’ or ‘he is leaving permanently’?

I think that’s all a bit up in the air at the moment. It might depend what division Forest find themselves in next season!

As mentioned before, it seems unlikely Forest will look to keep Diakhaby, so that might have an impact on their thinking about Adomah.

They have struggled a bit for creativity and pace, and while Adomah might not have much of the latter, it seems like he’s been a decent attacking threat for Cardiff.

Forest will need wide options next year - whether that means bringing back Adomah or allowing him to leave and look elsewhere.

What are Cardiff’s chances of signing him on a permanent deal?

Difficult to say really, for the reasons mentioned above. There are a few too many variables at the moment.

Perhaps the player himself will have a say on it all - whether he’s keen to move on, since he’s been playing regularly.
