Sunderland’s January disappointment with Will Vaulks now looks costly

The Welshman is now on fire with Cardiff City.

In January it looked as though Sunderland might be about to make a move for Cardiff City midfielder Will Vaulks.

The Daily Mail reported toward the end of the winter transfer window that Sunderland, along with Bristol City and Stoke City were keen on a loan deal for the player.

The 26-year-old only joined the Bluebirds in the summer for a deal reported by the Rotherham Advertiser to be worth around £3.5 million. But the Welsh international had struggled for regular football in South Wales, playing just nine times in the Championship at the time of the report.

In the end, nobody managed to get a deal done for Vaulks, who has remained at Cardiff.

It is now looking like a huge missed opportunity for the Black Cats.

Vaulks has gone on to find his feet in some style at Cardiff. The five-cap international has established himself as a regular in Neil Harris’s side in 2020, playing the full 90 minutes in Cardiff’s last nine Championship games. He has even scored twice in that time, as Cardiff remain in the hunt for a play-off spot.

Sunderland, meanwhile, continued their most recent stumble with a 2-0 loss to Bristol Rovers last night which means they remain in seventh place in League One.

Undoubtedly, Vaulks would have been a great addition to their promotion cause.
