EURO'S ON OR OFF?

Mon Mar 09, 2020 6:28 pm

If things escalate like in italy and throughout europe, i cannot see a tournament going ahead with people travelling evrywhere and on all transport,
it would be madness to go ahead imo, even a delay for later in the year would not work, its not going to go away like the snow quickly.

I don't know, I think they'll make the decision later. Looking at the case statistics from China, things snowballed between 22nd Jan and 17th Feb with it going form 544 active cases to 58,018 active cases on Feb 17. So obviously it exploded and will likely do so in Europe, which is being seen in Italy now.
However, the rather interesting trend after that is the amount of active cases (people who are infected) dropped, and continued to drop daily since. With it as of yesterday being 19,016 active cases. New cases have dropped today being at 44 (which is a few more than yesterday) but this was 2652 new cases on the 8th Feb.
The trend in China is seeing that things are improving and I'd like to hope that by mid to end April things will improve here too.
Sadly, however although this probably will be a short term problem it's probably going to get a lot more serious before it gets better first.
Again not too sure what to think personally. The news seem to be in hysterics at the minute and maybe rightly so but the statistics seem to show a rather strange picture. So hopefully we should be seeing the tail end of it all by the time the Euros are here

It is a big ask, but it did not take long to grip in China, it went from pretty much how many there are now in the UK to 40,000 in less than one month. But it's tailing off there now and things are improving and have improved pretty quickly.
It's a sad thing too see, and literally as this has been written the death toll is now 5 in the UK.
Sadly, football means nothing when we are talking about people's lives. I hope it does get better soon but think this will haves big impact on everything for a long time.
I think mid April is when to seriously make a decision. If we see the same trend as in China and cases are beginning to drop while things have continued to drop in China, it probably will be a go. But anything other than that I can't see it happening, or if it does behind closed doors.

9 cases currently in Azerbaijan
15 in neighbouring Georgia
20 in Russia
0 in Turkey.
It has increased from 4 in Russia on Saturday.
It is present there and could well increase but Italy is definitely the biggest worry at the minute in Europe.
And things also looking pretty bad in Germany, France and Spain.

Cant see it going ahead to be honest. Even if there's a dramatic downturn in its progression it would only take one Government from the 12 host nations to bow to public pressure and its off. The eastern European countries would riot if the forced to let thousands in from countries with worse infection rates. I'd did think it would be a straight cancellation but the more I look at it I think there's a possibility they could go with 2021. That would mean taking the June world cup qualifiers into the following season but if that season runs late its not so much of an issue with the World cup having been moved to November of 2022.

I'm resigned to it and started to look at cost recovery. Hotels were all done with free cancellation. Flights not so easy. 3 with Ryanair, 1 they've moved the time by 5 hours so should get that back. Just have to hope they cancel the others through lack of interest. One Baltic Air I'm not holding out much hope for. 2 Buta flights were already full so unless there's a drastic downturn in Azerbaijan then they will fly. Just one with Pegasus who seem to be the most reasonable. Currently you can cancel their flights to Italy up to the end of May and take a full refund. That will probably get extended given the current position in Italy.

Oh, that's awful. Hope it works out okay for you there if worst comes to worse.

Unless it stops quite soon I reckon they will postpone it unfortunately. As it’s supposed to peak here in April and May then I doubt it will happen. It’s not that easy to catch mind and will be mild for most people. I guess the nhs will cope better in spring and early summer.

As long as you have travel insurance in place before any official restrictions are put in place I think you should be ok for refunds.

All those flights came to just under £ 400 so it could have been worse. Actually it was, I was taking my son whose in his last year at Uni, so it was double bubble. On the positive side he'll be working next year, be able to pay for his own flights, hotel and stand his round - maybe.

I thought that, but it seems that unless there's foreign office advice advising against travel to the country then your up shit creek as far as claiming on your insurance goes. Although I suppose if your ill with coronavirus you could probably claim. The fact that the entire reason for the trip was cancelled is itself not a reason to make a claim.

I'm not sure I believe the Azeri figure, or indeed the Turkish or Syria figures of zero infections. They all have such strong links with Iran they're surely higher.

They’ll call them off, it’s months away and Italy is already in shutdown, the rest of Europe is only a few weeks behind!!!

In some ways that's even more worrying. It means the cases aren't being identified and therefore not treated or isolated :o

That could cause a lot of trouble for everyone if they aren't getting on top of it.

They'll call them off. My son was going to a world championship in London in July, today it was called off.

They wont even play them behind closed doors - as fans will still go out on p1ss to watch, unless they close the pubs when the matches are on ?.

I drove through town tonight - looked into a few bars - dead basically
