Can Vaulks fill the Joe Allen-shaped hole for Wales?
By Tom Coleman
There aren’t many players in the Championship who have enjoyed the sort of turnaround that Vaulks has had at Cardiff City. The midfielder was a colossus in the centre of the park once again in South Yorkshire and was well deserving of his goal midway through the second half.
He’s hitting form at the right time, and Cardiff might not be the only ones to benefit.
The news of Joe Allen being ruled out of the upcoming European Championships is likely to spark a period of national mourning, but the former Rotherham man must now surely see this as an opportunity to stamp his claim for Euro 2020 inclusion.
Harris has already pushed Vaulks as a potential option for Wales this summer.
Speaking after the win over Huddersfield a couple of weeks ago, Harris said: “His [Vaulks] form at the moment is certainly due an international call in my opinion, although I’m perhaps being a little bit biased. I’m not trying to do Ryan’s (Giggs) job for him at all.”
The midfielder’s form has showed little sign of slowing ever since and, while replacing Allen won’t be an easy task for anyone involved, recent form suggests Vaulks has to now be as good a candidate as any.

Although Vaulks is playing well at the moment he is not good enough for international level and is nowhere near the player Joe Allen is.
We would be better off dropping Ramsey deeper to play alongside Ampadu in midfield, move Bale into Ramseys position behind the striker and have Dan james and Brooke's on the wings

Back in Nov I didn't think the guy had a future with us but what a turn around.I think he's capable of filling in for Allen as a like for like replacement. Can't see anyone else being as comfortable in that role and putting Ramsey there is a waste of a good player IMO.

Really ? Based on current form I'd actually say that Vaulks offers more thrust, pace and aggression than Allen (who I previously rated very highly).
I'd rather both be going to the Euros but luckily we now have a bit of strength in depth.
Could do with Brookes being fit though !!

what is good enough .? half the team have been made up of 2nd tier players or players who are not regulars at their clubs.. so it is what it is.. no Will isn't Joe Allen but that can be said for whoever has played instead of many injured players.. he is playing and playing well for a top half championship team , could be much much worse.

Ramsey is the best option by a mile.
Joe Allen is a premier league class midfielder and we need to replace for another of the same standard not weaken by playing Will Vaulks.
People forget at the the moment he is playing against Barnsley and Wigan. In the summer would you trust him in a midfield against Italy and Switzerland ? Big big difference in standard.
He is nowhere near Joe Allen's quality and if he was still at Rotherham people would be saying they would rather King or William's play instead of him.

but Ramsey will be playing anyway !! This is how we can replace Allen.
In any event, Ramsey is not a defensive midfield player and therefore very unlikely that Giggs would use Ramsey there. He won't want to take him away from the attacking area of the field where he can do the most damage.

At the moment he is the obvious replacement I dont think anyone can doubt that. I dont think he is up to Allens level and its a blow for wales especially the way giggs likes us to play but it is what it is and for me at the moment Vaulks is probably the best option.
I can see logic in dropping Ramsey deeper but I think we would just lose to much doing so.

Agree with this. Ramsey is decent at playing deeper, he’s had to do it a few times for wales to come and get on the ball, but he’s so dangerous in the number 10 and that’s exactly where wales need him.
I could see Vaulks doing well for Wales, I think having those other lads around him I think he could go up a level. He’s clearly enjoying playing at the moment, I’d love to see him get the chance.

If Vaulks continues to progress until the end of the season, he surely must have a shot at taking that position. Every tournament has a surprise package and who knows it could be him. He has hugely improved from a player looking like yet more dreadful business by Warnock to someone who could be a regular for us. His decision to join us must have been motivated to get himself in to the national team and in to the shop window for the premier league. Good luck to him as he seems a genuinely honest player without a huge ego.
