Referees once again under the spotlight

By Tom Coleman

Another unwanted trend that has reared its head in recent weeks - and it’s frustratingly one that neither Harris nor anyone else at Cardiff can do anything about.

The more you look at it, the more you can’t help but be baffled at James Linnington’s failure to hand Cardiff a penalty just after half-time, as Brad Collins, perhaps lost on his way to Twickenham, hauled down Callum Paterson inside the box.

It was as clear a penalty as you’re ever likely to see, and is just the latest alarming indicator of the standard of officiating in this division.

Given that his side took three points, Harris may well not be choosing to dwell on this latest incident, but he must now be wondering what on earth has to happen for his side to be awarded a spot kick.

“Fortunately today we’re not talking about the referee costing us points. We took care of that ourselves," he said.

“But it’s been 25 games or something we got a penalty at Charlton, my first game in charge.

“We’ve not had a sniff since, and we can’t get any more blatant decisions.

“I don’t agree with the referee’s assessment that he wasn’t sure if it was a coming together. It was a rugby tackle!

“Hopefully we get a penalty decision in a fixture when we really need it.”
