When Cardiff fans went to Pompey

4,000 Cardiff fans travelled away to Portsmouth in 1982/83 season in League 3 :thumbright: :ayatollah:

CARDIFF City set out to dismantle Portsmouth promotion hopes during 1983, but only succeeded in taking away parts of their big clock at Fratton Park’s Milton End.

Cardiff ’ fans chant: “Pompey, Pompey, what’s the time?” When when ever we play Pompey

The Bluebirds did earn promotion from Division Three that season, finishing runners-up to champions Portsmouth.

It was on March 12, 1983 that Cardiff went to Portsmouth for a crucial promotion battle and fought out a goalless draw.

City fans were on a big open terrace behind a goal and at the same end was a huge clock.

“There were around 4,000 City fans and one Citt fan decided to climb on the clock.

Then others joined in and, there were parts of the clock torn down.

The Pompey fans were allowed to go round the back of the stand where we were and chuck a barrage of bricks over at us, and I think that was the reason we wrecked the clock, to chuck down on them. A few years ago I was talking to some Pompey fans on holiday, and of course I asked them the time, they both laughed and said that they found everything from the clock except the big hand, could be some city fan still has it?

Cheers Dill,

I always went to the Pompey games v us right back to the 70’s, I just loved the atmosphere and we were both very similar fans in those days.

Total respect for them and nowadays no matter how bad they have been of the pitch , their fans have stayed totally loyal and still going away in their thousands :thumbright: :thumbright:

Pompey fan here. Posted a few times over the years, always respected Cardiff fans, as have most pompey.
Yea the clock, remember it well, and as said above, I've met loads of Cardiff fans on my travels over the years and the clock is always a conversation starter.
You'll probably be surprised to hear that Cardiff fans are spoken highly of in Portsmouth, some even say if we was twinned with a club it would be you lot. Similar fans, passionate and tough.
Good luck for the rest of the season, and if you don't go up hopefully play you next season.

Good result today lads, playoffs in your grasp.
We was shit away again.
Anyway, we hit the 50,000 tickets sold for Wembley today, looks like our only chance of a good day out left this season
