Brains Pubs.

Thu Mar 05, 2020 3:57 pm

I apologise this is not a football topic but does anyone know the name of any of the Brains Pubs announced in the recent cull by the said company which are being closed down.

I’ve heard the Canton and the Butchers Arms..not the Napier.

The 3 Horse Shoes by Gabalfa flyover.

Re: Brains Pubs.

What happens is they will be put up for sale, so it does not nessesary mean that all of them will be shut down

Re: Brains Pubs.

Thats it.. I suppose whether they survive or not will depend on how much Brains are asking...but its not all bad news. The Grange and the Lansdowne re-opened, albeit in a different style, and Match day is a big plus for most Canton pubs.

Brains are not interested in selling beer. They are a property company which is only interested in selling of its real estate to developers. Beer is an afterthought- as witnessed by the quality of the stuff recently.

I disagree. I’ve been going to the Old Arcade since the late 70s, even on match day their Dark is excellent.

I spent some years in the booze trade- largely a pub’s survival depends on food sales nowadays.

They will struggle to convert many of the older listed pubs into living accommodations in my opinion.

Interesting,,, but I dont think the "Dark" is half as good as it used to be, when it was brewed in the Old brewery. It once almost had the consistency of a good Guinness, & was the most popular pint in Cardiff in the 50's and 60's, thanks to Guest Keens, and other local industries and trades, all sadly long gone. As for the once famous S.A.,,, this tipple was a favourite of mine, but not now. It, just like R.D. Dark, is simply not the same. Just my own personal taste,,, and opinion.

Anything on line about the closure or sale of these pubs? It's not that I am surprised as some pubs are almost empty Sunday to Thursdays although the Three Horse Shoes was heaving last Tuesday when I passed.

Or mini supermarkets. Not just Brains either Admiral, Royal, Vic and Barry Hotel have all gone in recent years. Only boozers who seem to be bucking the trend are Spoons.

My mate was having grub in the Ivor Davies last year, and a rat walked straight across the carpet in front of him..
Strangely, he hasn’t eaten there since.

I have to agree the Dark was a better pint in the late 70’s; I guess everything is relative- still prefer it and the pub to the alternative.

Your point about the big employers is interesting and evokes memories of my father before the War enjoying a Turkish bath after work on a Friday, followed by a few pints.

Showing your age there! The Vic must have closed thirty years ago. Very few traditional pubs left in Barry now.

Me and everyone I knew used to drink in the Albany for years, it used to be a great pub 10/15 yrs ago. New manager, no Guinness and most of us getting too old to hang out in pubs as you did in your 20’s means it’s been dying for sometime

Yep, The Albany hasn’t been the same since Jeff the previous landlord retired. New landlord is clueless and choice of beer awful.

Shame because in that location a decent landlord could do well there.

Biggest bar in Wales apparently. In its heyday would have been packed with seafarers but well before my time. Knocked down and sheltered accommodation now.

Re: Brains Pubs.

Brains pubs in the last few years have moved away from there cheaper traditional Ale drinkers reputation that has helped them do so well and tried to move into the posher expensive Birra Moretti and Peroni premier lager markets

I think that may turn out to be a bad move on there part.

Worked with an old scouser who’d been a merchant seaman, he said he was having a piss in a bar in Malaysia and written on the wall was “ if you ever go to Barry visit the world famous Chain Locker”

Shame such an infamous place had to be knocked down. But to be fair to Brains on this one- hardly anyone used it in its last years. Too big to maintain.

The Bells, Windsor and The Marine also gone, The Castle under serious threat, Think they're keeping the bar but turning the building into flats. The first pint I bought myself was in the Bindles. Brains just spent a fortune on the Mariner, but probably only because the building would serve no other purpose. It's doing well though.
