ISAAC VASSELL

By Glen Williams

Tuesday 3rd March 2020

As far as comeback games go, you will be hard-pressed to find one as bad as this, not only did he pull up with injury and this season looks finished, but his rustiness was abundantly clear.

You have to feel sorry for Vassell, who looked clearly distraught as he trudged off the pitch injured, putting his hand over his face before smashing a hurdle on the running track at Leckwith.

Following nearly six months out with a quad injury, it was a saddening sight for the dozens in attendance.

A collective groan was let out when Vassell pulled up sharply before feeling the top of his leg. Another massive setback in the player's progress and you just wonder how many setbacks he can take.

Since October 29, 2017, he has played just 17 games of senior football.

These are the best years of his career, remember, and they are being cruelly wasted on a physio's rehab bench.

Since the day of his 24th birthday, the striker has been injured for 528 days owing to injury. That equates to 82 games.

He is now 26 and a half years old and it is unlikely he will have many more games under his belt before he turns 27 this September.

Whichever way you look at it, on a human level, that is truly devastating.

When he was on the pitch, albeit for only 25 minutes, his rustiness was abundantly clear.

His passing was wayward, he allowed Watford left back Cameron Green in with an errant ball intended for the Bluebirds' right back, with nerves clearly coursing through his veins.

Minutes later, he was gifted the easiest of chances to seal a dream comeback when Tom Sang's dangerous ball fizzed across the box, affording Vassell the opportunity to tap home from close range with an open goal gaping in front of him.

The result, however, was a clean-air shot, the hallmark of a striker woefully out of form and lacking any confidence.

Then came the incident. Brad Smith did well to slide a tempting through ball into Vassell's path, which looked as though it would leave him one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but the forward's sprint ground into an abrupt hobble.

Vassell's hand instinctively felt his right thigh and that, as they say, was that.

As far as his future goes, it looks as though this campaign is now a right off. Give him a full summer of rehab and see where we are in August.

Poor bloke. You have to feel sorry for him and I hope he can recover to play football again. Looking at his injury record it looks like his career may now be in doubt. The decision to sign him is shocking though. Whilst he signed for only a couple of million how Harris could have done with that money in the last window.

Got to feel for the guy and (unlike some malingerers) it does seem he is desperate to get playing again...

Good luck, Isaac Vassell :ayatollah: :bluescarf:
