What tipped angry Cardiff City boss Neil Harris over the edge against Brentford and the 'embarrassing' response he received from PGMOL this week

The Bluebirds fought back from two goals down to draw level against the Bees, but they could have stolen a winner right at the very end

A furious Neil Harris admitted he was the angriest he had been all season following Simon Hooper's refereeing performance in the Cardiff City-Brentford match draw.

Sunday 1st March 2020

The Bluebirds were denied a number of penalty shouts late on, some of which appeared to be have good merit.

On one particular occasion, Junior Hoilett appeared to be tripped inside the box as the game crept towards stoppage time for what, to many, looked like a certain penalty, but Hooper waved it away.

Harris was incensed following a number of contentious decisions from the referee and was frantically waving his arms on the touchline.

It follows what Harris believes to be two poor refereeing performances at home against both Wigan and Nottingham Forest and his anger was laid bare for all to see on the touchline.

So, was it the angriest he had been all season?

"Yeah, it's probably a build-up of the last three home games," he responded.

"It tipped me over the edge.

"It's no disrespect to the officials today, it was a difficult fixture to referee at times today.

"But it's a clear-cut penalty (on Hoilett) and they have to get those decisions right. That's the difference between us winning the game.

"At 0-0 against Forest we have one, we have various decisions against Wigan and then again today. It's a big call at 2-2 with not long to go and they can't keep going against us.

"We have to get the rub of the green at some stage. One penalty in 24 games, it's not right."

What further angered Harris is that prior to the game against the Bees, he asked to be put in contact with PGMOL to voice his frustrations.

He wanted to air his concerns and also wanted to understand the rationale behind the decisions made against both Wigan and Forest.

The solid Cardiff City player ratings as wind-up merchant and battering ram excel but two struggle in Brentford thriller

The response he describes as 'embarrassing'.

"In my last report I asked for a phone conversation and didn’t get one," he told BBC Radio Wales after the game.

"I got a response that was really embarrassing.

"I hear all the time that officials want to improve and want to work with clubs, but you saw how animated I was today and I’m not often like that because I try and set a precedent and a standard on the touchline as a proud manager of this football club.

"I try and keep a calm head but the decisions tipped me over the edge.

"It makes you not want to work with referees and help them develop.

"Everyone keeps asking me about VAR, it will find us one day, if it had found us in the last three months we would have been on a much better position in the league."

Even Brentford boss Thomas Frank conceded that the challenge on Hoilett by Ethan Pinnock late on was in fact a penalty.

"I think actually it was a penalty to them at the end," he said.

That will be of little solace to Harris and Co, though.

We are a Welsh club. All the referees are guess what. F ing English. We have no chance of fair play.

i dont think it has anything to do with us being welsh..... the big problem is the premier league gets the best refs. if the ref has a bad game, he gets demoted to the league below for the following game...that should be wrong. its like saying, you've been bad the past few weeks, go be bad where there is less coverage

If we (fans) really believe its to do with us being a Welsh club then its better if we join the LoW. However we have been promoted twice and the Jacks had 8 (i believe) seasons in the premier league so I rule out conspiracy.

If there is a bias, which I don't (you just remember the poor decisions and forget the favourable) its to do with the way we are perceived to be or play.
We are a big, physical bullying team so if you live by the sword you die by the sword. Morrison seems fair game for most muggings in offence, Paterson will only get obvious decisions because he falls over at the smell of contact, but quite happily leaves a shoulder, leg or arse in when chasing down defenders. Vaulks and Ralls are good strong physical lads, Pack is also a big lad but without the physicality and Bacuna is no shrinking violet. Add to that Bennett is infamous for taking out Sane and we only just lost Mr professional dark arts of defending to WBA and you can see why we may have a reputation.

We lost a master of intimidating referee and replaced him with someone who sounds like a geography teacher.

That just leaves Josh and Glatzel who appear "nice"

I just think refs have it in their mind to let a bit go when they ref us.

There’s no bias just incompetence and inconsistency.

I do reckon the refs know in advance what players look for penalties and for us it’s Morrison. He gets fouled in each game and yet in past 2 seasons I can’t recall a spot kick being given when he’s dragged down, pushed and blocked constantly.

your probably right and when they come across the same players regularly as was the case last Saturday no doubt opinions on players are carried from 1 game to the nxt..
