CITY PLAYER RATINGS versus BRENTFORD

Sun Mar 01, 2020 2:09 am

Alex Smithies 8[/b
Made a couple of spectacular saves once again and sharp with his feet when he needed to be. Made a couple of crucial interventions late on, too.

[b]Dion Sanderson 7

His scramble defence is becoming a massive asset for City. Can make up ground quickly in recovery defence. Linked up well with Adomah, too, a partnership to look out for.

Sean Morrison 6
An average game from the captain, by his standards. Had a tendency to pass backwards when Cardiff were under pressure, but assured enough.

Curtis Nelson 6
Missed a big defensive header which gifted Watkins a chance, which the striker didn't take. Made two crucial interceptions later on, though.

Joe Bennett 5
Put in one or two very good challenges in each half but relatively quiet in attack. Missed the chance of the game late on to put Cardiff ahead.

Leandro Bacuna 5
Struggled in his new role as a deep-lying midfielder at times. Often overrun against a good Brentford midfield and distribution left a bit to be desired.

Will Vaulks 8 (star man)
Added that much-needed niggle in the middle of the park for Cardiff and was a real wind-up merchant once again.

Joe Ralls 7
A great sight to see his name back on the scoresheet and was a calming presence in the absence of Pack in midfield. So tidy with the ball.

Albert Adomah 7
Continues to look a brilliant addition to this Cardiff City squad. Brings such experience down the right and his crossing was top notch.

Junior Hoilett 6
Got City on a roll with a well-taken goal in the first half. Quietened a little as the game went on, but a solid outing overall.

Callum Paterson 8
What a nuisance he was. Chased everything, challenged for every first and second ball and never let the centre-backs rest. A real battering ram all afternoon.

Subs

Danny Ward (on for Ralls 80) 6
Ran the channels well and linked up nicely on a couple occasions with Callum Paterson late on.

Apart from Bacuna (who I thought was excellent) I wouldn’t argue with any of those marks.

Yeah I thought bacuna did well. We finally had some mobility in mid field and all 3 can almost dove tail with each other as they are all similar and we'll rounded players. In the absence of Tomlin I think we need those 3 there to give us a bit more zip. We did look to get forward more I thought.

I think the wind was the telling factor in both their goals to be honest but in open play we had them reasonably well contained

Really don’t understand how Wmithies is getting such a high rating made easy saves from long shots didn’t have much else to do. And his positioning for the free kick was awful and if it was better he might have saved it. For him to be rated higher than the likes of Ralls and Adomah is an utter joke.

The saves Smithies made yesterday, I would expect a professional goal keeper to make them but they weren’t as easy as made out due to the swirling and strong wind. I don’t think the wind had anything to do with Brentford’s first goal, they just reacted more quickly to the second ball in our box after our failure to clear the danger. Also, was there any reason Glatzel didn’t play yesterday? Please don’t say because he’s crap !

I’m not a RG hater but I think it was more suited to CP yesterday
