It's a rapidly changing situation, people were not taking it that seriously until last week, since then the first death to a UK citizen, the financial markets have gone into freefall, and reports are starting to say that it's 100 times to 1000 times more infectious than SAR's.

I meet a lot of people in my job and many are starting to worry and stop going to event's and holidays, I don't want to be alarmist, but this could be the pandemic they've been talking about for years, let's hope the authorities and ready for it, this looks like a life-changing event!

I don't think the media help much. One British person has died from this so far. On average, 12,000 people die of seasonal flu in the UK each year, and records say this has been as much as 20,000 in the past. I suppose ordinary flu which kills thousands each years does not sell newspapers or attract advertisers. I remember the swine flu epidemic which had similar coverage by the media. I think eventually that was responsible for around 400 deaths. Hopefully this one won't be any worse. Maybe the youngsters will get some extra school holidays out of it.

Not demeaning the seriousness of this virus and the effects on many people but you are so right that seasonal flu results in thousands of related deaths each year

Coronavirus has taken relatively few to date and is not considered as serious as previous 'new' outbreaks

This year's current media focus; in the New Year it was Harry and Meghan and others will surely follow as the days (and media need for stories to run with) roll on...

You are correct it is a rapidly changing situation and yes it's likely the virus will be present in regions all over the world and likely in towns and places closer and you'd like. But very few people ever display severe symptoms and the death toll so far from the thousands of infections is miniscule in comparison to other potentially dangerous infections. Realistically in developed countries it will be the economy that takes the brunt of the damage, stock trading is already affected, sports and entertainment events may be cancelled, school closures and local quarantines will likely force many working parents to stay at home with their children instead of turning up to their jobs. At the end of it though things will continue as normal, as they have done with the total death toll effectively being neglible.

The people really facing severe danger from this are those that live in under developed nations where health care systems are underfunded or non existent, or warzones like northern Syria and Yemen where healthcare is again limited and movement of health workers and flow of workers is extremely restricted.

This really isn't going to be the next Spanish Flu of 1918 with it's estimated 50 million deaths so everyone should simply remain calm whilst not undertaking overt risks, if your government tells you to avoid travel to 'area X' it's probably best to listen to them on this occasion. Hopefully I won't be proved wrong and in a few months we'll just be back to worrying about where goals are gonna come from  .

There could be a halt to the football league if things develop which would help clubs with injured players, but not looking good for the euros.

Re: OFF TOPIC: CORONAVIRUS IN WALES

Twelve more patients in England have tested positive for coronavirus, taking the total number of UK cases to 35.

Three patients were confirmed as close contacts of a man from Surrey, who was the first to be infected within the UK.

One person from Essex had "no relevant travel" and it was unclear how they had got the virus, while the remaining eight had visited affected areas.

It comes after Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the UK was still in the "containment" phase of the outbreak.

He said the government contingency plans, which will be published this week, included banning big events.

DAVIDS

The worse thing about this virus there will be no vacine for at least 12 months and nobody has a immune system to battle against this
unlike flu we have all had a dose of flu in our lives and have built in immunity to some degree.

I think we are right to be concerned about it but lets not get to over the top about it.

In china 80,000 have caught it and 2000 have died. Thats 1 in 40

1 in 40

Or to put it another way....... within your lifetime there is a 1 in 40 chance of developing cancer (which in itself is survivable in many instances)

The people who have died are often those in the 80+ age braked (14% have died) where as the younger groups only 0.2% have actually died and the majority are because those individuals have underlying illnesses.

I wonder if it's man made?
So that the drug companies can make even more money!

Aids back in the 80's was also rumoured to be man made.

Or a Chinese biological weapon, tested on their own people first?

I'm only kidding.

But the truth is out there for all you conspiracy theorist's.

It only takes one, and it's 35 we know of, with thousands of people returning from and going skiing in Italy, and traveling around the rest of the World.

We'll have a big increase in March and even bigger in April, let's see where we are after that?
